VW boss states there’s no future for the Polo. Euro 7 means the business case isn’t working.

More like they can sell loads of different kinds of little Crossovers and small SUVs for more profit, They sell tons of ICE versions of the T-Roc, Taigo and T-Cross. See also the Fiesta with the Puma and upcoming mini Puma. Ford Focus going too, how long does the Golf have?

The production version of the ID Life concept will be the replacement small car, VW says 2025 https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-relea...

Car manufacturers can either kill off the existing model names like Fiesta and Polo, or make the new versions EV, like the Megane.

Surely VW not wanting to commit a load of R&D budget to a 2025 onwards “cheap” ICE vehicle is be to expected with the transition to EV’s.

Bigger ICE vehicles get a stay of execution for a bit due to being slightly more profitable. The day that VW announce there will be no future ICE golf can not be more than a couple of years away. IMHO a ICE mk9 isn’t going to happen.

There are still plenty of ICE crossovers about and new ones due. That's where the money is for car manufacturers in the current market, EVs also. For some there isn't the profit margin in B and C segment hatchbacks there once was. They don't have the image or perceived safety that crossovers and small SUVs have, the car brands have done their marketing and the general public lap it up. I've no issues with manufacturers making money but pretending it's for anything other than profit is silly.

Brands like Kia and Hyundai will sell you cars of all shapes and sizes and their market share is growing where many brands are losing. Also the predicted assault from China looks like its finally happening which will hill Euro car manufactures pretty hard. MG have proven that people are happy to buy (lease) Chinese cars, they are on fire with their sales and market share increase, the new EV hatch has done very well against Euro brands in tests too, there is an EV B segment car coming and a new EV too (Marvel R. They also have other far east models that might make it here too like the MG5 Scorpio, MG7 as well as a few others.

There's a rumour I heard that the Golf may be replaced by... the id.Golf - so keeping the well known name but also using the id branding.

Surely there is still a market for small conventional petrol hatchbacks. Not everyone will want jacked up versions on the same base with slightly more rugged looks. The Koreans understand this and ,like MG are doing really well.

Manufacturers are in the business of selling cars in which they can make money. There have been a few articles regarding the larger profit margins of more expensive crossovers (many look at monthlies not list price). The Koreans are still selling 2 polo sized cars (2 slightly smaller cars too) but several small crossovers. Even the Kia Picanto does an X-line version, which is one of the best selling models.

Look at what Toyota has done with the Aygo, Honda are part way there with the Jazz Crosstar. You mention MG, the MG3 is MGs lowest seller and the replacement is going to be an EV only. The Dacia Sandero might be the small petrol car savior, but even that is topped with a Stepway model.

The crossover/SUV craze is here to stay and there will be many more conventional car casualties. They've killed the once popular MPV and Coupe markets, there was a time when most mainstream manufacturers had them. Estate/saloon cars seem to be taking a bit of a hit too, in Europe at least anyway. Very different car market if you head east.
