Watcha Pistonheads!
I'm Trading my Series 2 MR2 for a 2001 Golf Turbo. Any information that anyone can give me on the car would be much appreciated. It's done 58k but is TOTALLY Mint inside and out. I'm told the cam belt doesn't need to be changed until 120,000k miles!!! I wanted to know about when the turbo is likely to need replacing.
It drives really well for a FF car but i thought I'd ask just in case anyone has heard anything negitive that i should know!

Cheers.

i think i would change it about 60K to be safe thats the adverage for a cambelt change, and im not sure when or if the turbo will need replaceing if regally serviced and not thrashed, but i know that the engine puts out 150BHP standard and can give out 200BHP by super chiping but this will cost at least £500, also you can gain a bit more with a S/S exhaust and K&N filter. who told you that the cam belt will be safe for £120,000 miles

You might want to consider the Leon which has more standard power.

A friend who has one asked a VW dealer... I know it sounds a little dubious. How much do you think the belt change would be?

Hi I had my First GTi 1.8T on a 51 reg got to say if you want a reliable fun car its great but its not that competative, especially in the wet! (Too porky) But with sound mechanics and decent interior you cant go wrong for you money. also you should be able to pick a 2001 up for between £5-6K at present, its a buyers market. Also see my previous post re "chipping" advice as I have had to go back to a Golf following my recent wedding ( which I'm now paying for!) an ECU remap for around £400 takes the golf up to 200bhp which hopefully will make it the car it always should have been, or at least a bit more competative off the lights!!!

dont listen to the cambelt at 120k thing, i had an Audi A3 1.8T before i got my V6 4 Motion-its exactly the same engine as the Golf GTI turbo and the cambelt snapped at 85k and ruined 18 out of 20 valves, i was then told it should be checked/changed at 80k and as the dealer i bought it from hadnt done this they repaired it for me, personally i wouldnt go over 80k for a cambelt change.

bought my mk4 about five months ago and love it. I had a tvr before whoich was great, when it was working, but tiring. The mk4 is the last of teh luxury interiors. Won't be buying a mk5. I also got the car for half the price of the 4motions I looked at at the same time.

I'm very pleased wit hthe car, got 40mpg on a slow cruise back from wales the other day and it goes plenty from standstill. I've only needed a new valve on teh tuurbo, they do go apparently. NOt expencive and no big deal.

A really reliable, german, solid, practical, well thought out, fast, quiet cracker of a car. Am I biased? maybe, but I woudl never recommend a tvr to anyone, so maybe not.

the GF picked up a '51 1.8 Turbo a couple of weeks ago.

The good bits:

Turbo whistle and chirrup!
Blue dials (i'll get my coat)
Awesome build quality - the most solid-feeling car I've ever driven.
Effortless to drive - just jump in and off you go.

The not-so-good bits:

Very little power until the turbo comes on boost.

Right... gotcha. Thanks for the headsup on that. The car I should be getting has done 58k So i'll be ok for a good couple of thousand milesbefore I change it. Just out of interest do you know how much the repairs would have cost you if you had been paying for it. (With and without the damage caused by the belt snapping)

i dont know how much a belt change should have been, it usually is done within a service, if i had to pay for the repairs im not sure but at a guess i would say anywhere between £500 and £1000 im really not too sure, good luck with the car anyway it sounds like a good one.

Why don;t you get the engine conversi0on from Fensport for the MR2? It would whop the ass off any golf you can mention (stock for stock).
As far as I am aware, it is 1500 for the 245 bhp engine, including all ancillaries, and around 800 to fit it. Not a bad investment, especially if your car is structurally good. The engines from fensport are top notch!

I think cambelt should be changed at 80k or after five years, whichever is soonest. Mine is going in for the belt and service soon. about £600 i reckon. Painfull, but better than the thing blowing up at full pelt.

went out for a blat in mine last night, buy it buy it buy it.
