Skoda Key Battery Issue
Discussion
Car is a 2020 Superb TDi 150 SEL Exec with KESSY
About a month ago I started getting messages about the key fob battery needing replacement and occasionally the car would not see the key, battery changed for an Energiser following the instructions in the manual and all seemed well but . . . . .
The tailgate started beeping when opened from the button on the tailgate, not the continuous beeping you get when opening from the key but one long beep when fully open - something it had never done before.
The tailgate button on the fob seemed to be very sensitive and on one or two occasions the tailgate started closing while getting something out of the boot.
Three weeks later the key died - no messages about low battery, it just stopped doing anything.
Have put the second Energiser into the key and it seems (36 hours later) to be normal and the tailgate beep has stopped. This time I followed the instructions for the Karoq where you press the button for at least five seconds to reset the key (In the Superb Manual it just says press any button while the battery is out, nothing about how long).
Should I be worried and should I carry a spare key?
It is a 2020 SEL Exec with kessy and the key is kept in an RF proof container at night (old sweet tin).

My wife's 10 month old Kodiaq L&K has recently also started beeping when the boot fully opens. I believe there is a reset procedure - allow the boot to fully open then manually push it to ensure it is fully open, then press and hold the button on the underside of the boot for 5 seconds. If it still beeps after the reset procedure it needs to go back to Skoda for a replacement module.
Daughter has a SEAT Ateca with KESSY - I'm assuming a pretty similar system although hers is late 2018 so the key doesn't go to sleep. If your key goes to sleep - I think they introduced motion detect in 2019 - then it doesn't need to be kept in a tin!
Her's use CR2025 and the life is very random and some batteries don't work at all. One was changed at service (for £12!) and failed a month later.
She's become adept at getting into the car and starting it "manually". Oddly, three times now the car has opened up fine up on a cold morning without problem, than when she's arrived at work she hasn't been able to lock the car, which isn't a problem there so no hassle getting back in.
A message does pop up on the dash when the battery is low but with KESSY you don't see it as it flashes past that stage - you'd have to turn the ignition on and not start the car to see it.
Some owners put a CR2032 into the fob but it's fiddly and I was worried that the fob would burst open if she dropped it. I read people had good results with Energiser batteries so I bought a few and just changed one after about a year. I had no need to reset anything although at one of the changes it seemed uncertain at first, but then seemed to sort itself out.

Weird. I've replaced the batteries in our Superb's fobs twice now without issue (2019 model). Not even bothered pressing any buttons - just popped the the old battery out and the new one in.
Same with my 2018 Superb. Straight swap. Though the first new battery I tried showed low battery warning after a few days.Tried a Duracell and that fixed it. Not sure if that size battery has a short shelf life or there are counterfeits online.
Either way. Duracell from supermarket working fine
