NOT using oil?!
Discussion
Has anyone heard anything so stupid from a main dealer before?
“We can’t have overfilled your car with oil because it would have used it up by now even if we did”
They then went on to quote the VW guidelines for maximum oil usage as though they were what the car was supposed to use.
Crazy…
I seem to have one of the 1.5/150hp engines that doesn’t use any oil. None of my last cars have used any oil between services apart from one Volvo diesel that only used a little and was expected as a D4.
I know some VW engines can use a bit of oil but to try and fob you off saying that every engine must use oil is a bit lame.

Yes, unlike my V40 I have a real dipstick on the golf. (The V40 computer just guessed what the oil level would be based on driving.)
The issue arose as I wasn't familiar with the marking, it was actually another dealer that pointed out it was a little bit high. The dipstick isn't a brilliant design as it has a bend right where you need to measure. I'd have expected the selling dealer to have spotted it though, basic checks like oil level and tyre pressures before sale should be done by any backstreet garage I'd assumed.
It's the first time I've ever heard a garage try and quote the old '1 litre every 600 miles' for an expectation of oil use on a low miles car as a justification for why it hasn't gone down.
Why would someone buy a car from a garage that tells its customers to expect to burn oil on newer cars they are selling?

I seem to read about dealers who simply fob customers off with mostly complete nonsense.
My advice would be to ignore them and monitor it yourself, especially after any long trips and take a litre for top ups. You'll get a good idea of how much, if any it uses.
If it is a little bit high and hasn't adversely affected the running it'll most likely be fine. Same with a little low but of course worth topping up as a smaller amount of oil is working harder.
Do you change it yourself?

Thanks, yes I was most surprised at the fobbing off from supposedly a family business that had been in the area for years. You would have thought they would want to develop relationships rather than destroy them!
Weirdly, I had used a sister dealership with a different brand and they were excellent, so had been suckered thinking that I would receive reasonable service at the VW one as well.
I'll keep it under regular checks, I don't change my own oil as I tend to run cars until the manufacturer extended warranty can't be extended anymore - mileage is around 20k pa recently, so it's likely I'll only have the golf 3-4 years before I hit the 100k limit.
