Hi all

I'm after some advice. A colleague has suffered a recent bereavement and has an A5 cabriolet. It's an auto, petrol and has done 130k miles. It's a 2016 plate and a garage has told them that it'll cost £3500 to repair and that the car is only worth £4600. I think that they are trying to rip someone off in a vulnerable state.

Can anyone give a rough estimate on costs for a clutch and timing belt and also a rough idea on value. I've checked Autotrader but struggling to find a similar car to compare.

Any help is gratefully received.

Clutch on an auto? Yes, they're being ripped off!

Yes. I'm not really up on autos to be honest but assumed that there was something within it. Maybe a DSG? I don't know and only have limited details which I appreciate makes any help difficult.

DSG would be an oil and filter change to make sure. The cam belt is around 350 fitted but you should get the water pump done as well.

Thanks for the info, it's very helpful. I'll pass those approximate costs on for the belt change.

I would have thought it might even be chain driven, I think you need to fid a little more information out,

True. 2005 onwards is more likely a chain was used.

You are right having done some more research it appears that they are chain driven. In that case does anyone have a rough cost for chain replacement if this is genuinely a problem?

Anywhere between £800 and £1300 depending on parts and quality of parts, we would use genuine.

You would only need to replace the chain if it rattles or their are fault codes, you might be able to get away with just the tensioner.

Thanks Steve. I don't believe it is making a rattle although I haven't heard it running. But they tell me it doesn't. If it is just the tensioner how much would that be?

All I can suggest is you find another VW group indie for a 2nd opinion.

Is it only one garage that has quoted the faults and the work required?

What condition is the car in? Is it borked and undrivable ?

Yes just one garages opinion and completely agree about a second opinion. They just aren't really in the right place to be messing around with all this at the minute. Apparently it runs and drives fine so I'm thinking it's someone trying to take advantage of their situation. There is an emotional connection to the car involved as well for the owner.
