Skoda Octavia 1.0Tsi - amazing economy
Discussion
Just covered over 500 miles in a year old Skoda Octavia 1.0Tsi Technology. Actually a very surprising car -quiet and comfortable. Cruised along happily 60-70 mph and just showed its tiny capacity on long inclines where you needed to go down into fifth. What surprised me most was just how economical it was. For a large car to average around 65 mpg over the last few days is excellent and shows just far things have come on in the past few years. Has anyone covered big miles on one of these? Would they make a good second hand buy?
My dad had one on a hire once when driving around Ireland. Covered a fair few miles and came to the same conclusion as you, great car, struggles if you load it up or it needs to go up a hill.
I find the 1.0 engine a bit wheezy for my usage and even the 1.5 can be a bit lacking in poke on country lanes if overtaking.

I did 30k miles in Skoda Karoq with the same engine, didn't get as good mpg as you though, long term average was around 46mpg. The only time the engine struggled was fully loaded, five up, in Yorkshire where I found I'd need to change down a gear too frequently for comfort.
The only weak spot I'm aware of (and it would put me off buying second hand) is the clutch - I found it really easy to slip it with a resulting burning smell when going for a fast exit from a junction. There seem to be quite a few reports online of premature clutch failure on VW group cars with this drivetrain.
Shame really, it is a cracking engine, you can easily cruise quietly at 85 or 90 on (foreign) motorways at less that 3k revs.
