2018 Q5 ... every time I pull away, once the car hits 25mph (aka 40kmh) I hear and feel two metallic clunks in quick succession from the steering. Every time, always once per journey, always the same speed. If I stop and switch the engine off (but not if it cuts through stop/start) I get it again.

I spoke to a mechanic at the Audi dealer, he reckoned it could be something like Lane Assist cutting in once the car hits a certain speed. I suspect he's on the right lines (rather than it being broken) but my car doesn't have Lane Assist.

Initially I thought it was a broken spring, it has that slightly abstract mechanical feel, until I realised it was 100% repeatable. Then I worried it was the steering lock, and it might apply itself at the wrong moment. Certainly it's a bit suspicious that it happens at the same speed every time, which suggest the car is doing something. Any thoughts?

It's the ABS carrying out it's self test function.
Perfectly normal, doesn't cause any harm. But is rather intrusive!

I had in my head there was something to do with hold assist too (which in itself uses the ABS).

Thanks, it is odd, haven’t had it with previous Audis. No hill assist on mine either, so it’s not that
