So Ive replaced what feels like everything, the list so far goes....

Distributor cap
HT Leads
Spark Plugs
Rotor Arm
Fuel Pump
All Associated Relays
Starter Motor
Ignition Switch

Still she won't start and absolutely no spark. The car turns over freely and sounds to have good compression but I can't get a spark. Today we had the aftermarket alarm and immobiliser taken out just to eliminate that but still nothing.

Anybody have any ideas?
Any help appreciated smile

Car is a Mk2 Golf Gti 1.8 8V

Yeh, Ive ordered one, be here tomorrow, only thing is I thought a failing/failed coil would just cause rough running not zero spark?

If your ignition coil is kaput you will have no spark at all. Have you tested the coil circuit?

So.... No power to the coil, tried replacing the coil for what its worth but no change.

Also swapped out the ignition control module for a used but working part still turns but no spark or power to the ignition system banghead

AFAIK, the +ve for the coil comes from the fuse box, with the negative coming from the ECU.

Might be handy to know if it's the +ve or -ve side of the supply which has been lost.

I think its the negative side, does that mean an issue with the ECU?

Probably already beyond the point where a wiring diagram would come in handy.

Do you have access to one, or have you tried sourcing an ignition circuit diagram for your specific model online ?

To be honest Im an expert in not being able to understand a wiring diagram so I think anything like that would be well beyond my skill set read

Think may need to get it dragged into a specialist

This could be some help.

Check the condition of the terminals inside the block connector on the coil and the earth strap from the coil that goes to the head.

On the mechanical side i would check the woodruff key in the crank pully as i have had this before, when i first got a Mk2 Golf Gti, it had sheared and the pulley was slipping, hence it was way out of timing and wouldnt fire up, new woodruff key and it was fine.
