Did VW ever fix the carbon build up and coil pack problems in these? I'm quite tempted with a mk6/7 GTI but need something reliable.

All DI petrol engines suffer carbon build up to some degree. Earlier MK7 GTI have port as well as DI so not an issue.

Coil packs are not generally problematic; mine are original at 91k (MK7 GTI).

Does the Cupra 280 use the same engine?

The same as a MK7 GTI?

Very similar, but not the same. Headline difference is the turbo (IS38 v SI20).

Think of the Cupra 280 as a Golf R engine with GTI drivetrain.
