My stupid car has been doing this for some time & I solved it today.

1. There is a pipe going from the back of the engine around to the top of charcoal filter just behind the windscreen washer bottle. This pipe has a plastic ribbed section which eventually breaks. I needed to replace this pipe. You can tell it's leaking by the hissing sound when you rev the engine.

2. Clean/replace the MAF sensor

3. Disconnect the battery for 15 mins to reset the fault codes in the ECU.

Do a search for 'MAF clean' on www.ukmkivs.net for more detailed information.

If you're replacing it, the sensor comes already fitted to the housing. This housing is secured to the airbox with 2 philips screws.

If you're cleaning the old one, the sensor can be removed by undoing the 2 security torx screws and gently pulling it out.

My car (X reg, 57k miles) is now running better than at any point in the past 2.5 years / 30k miles.

hi, thanks for the help, ive got the plug pulled out at the moment, but this has lit up the dashboard like a christmas tree, i have the diognostic light on aswell as the ESP light for some reason, i guess thier interlinked, when i plug it back in it suffers from fuel starvation again so i guess the sensor is faulty, my car is very similar to yours X reg and 54.5k miles,i might try cleaning the old sensor tomorrow to see if this works instead of buying a new 1,to reset the ECU i just need to disconect the battery for 15 mins and then replace?,will this cause my radio to ask for a code?, i have only had the car 5 days and have no clue where the code would be.

Yes, you'll need a radio code.
It should be in the service book or on a sticker in the owners manual.

Use this link for instructions on cleaning the MAF.

www.uk-mkivs.net/forums/170890/ShowPost.aspx

This thread is the one that gave me the idea my MAF was the problem

www.uk-mkivs.net/forums/200528/ShowPost.aspx

Note, some people have found that cleaning it helps, others that it only helps short term and eventually it needs replacing.
Also, when you connect the battery back up, turn the key to position 1 and wait for all the whirring to stop in the engine (approx 2 mins) before starting the car.

hi thanks for the info and the site, it looks very useful, ive ordered a new part so i might as well just replace it, also do you know if driving with the plug pulled will affect the car in anyway just for a day or so, i know its taken out the ESP but is it bad for the car?, my thought was well its better that it runs a little rich than lean?

I bought one last week for £75 + VAT + £20 surcharge which is refunded when I return the old part.
I've cleaned mine for now but will change it if anything else goes wrong.
This was from VW Hampstead.
GSF sell them cheaper but for the sake of £10 I went with the VW part.

It's a security bit.
I had a set that I bought from Wickes a year ago for £4.99 which contained a suitable bit (6 star with bit in the middle).
The new MAF I bought is 5 star and bit in the middle. If I do change I'll change the pipe it fits in as well.

do you notice any power gains because im a bit reluctant in replacing it, i might just cleane it, i fount that the part discribed in the first reply "No 2" a ribed pie had split so i got some insulation tape on it, there is no air leaking now, but i was wondering if there was any power gains by replaceing/cleaning the sensor

You need to replace this pipe (£31 from dealer), the heat from the engine dries out the tape and it will eventually split again - mine held for only a couple of weeks.

I'd say clean the sensor but be prepared to replace it eventually.
