Chaps, looking for a bit of advice

Have a 1988 3.2 Carrera as my one and only car at present and i'm racking up the miles

Was thinking of the audi 80 as a work horse, preferably in automatic guise (live in London). Idea being to use my NCB on an Audi and insure Porker as a classic car.

Am i right in thinking the 1.6, 1.8 and possibly the 2.0 (8v) are somewhat pedestrian with an auto box. I really like the sound of a 2.6 with auto, but again, servicing etc will be a lot more. I'm no street racer, but a bit of pep wouldn't go amiss

I've not seen a single 2.0 16v with auto - do these exist?

Whaddya reckon??

Cheers

Shirish

PS are there any websites that discuss 'non-performance' audi's

I've never really seen the point of the 2.6 engine. It's slower than the 2.8 but not all that more economical.

Maybe worth considering the 100 for the 2.5tdi.

Thanks for that

TBH, I prefer the looks of the 80 to the 100, just that much more compact.

Do yo have an opinion on the 2.0 engines, both 8 and 16 valve??

Has to be automatic too, my left leg is disproportionately bigger than my right after driving the 911 in London.

the smallest engine in the facelifted (92 on) 80 range is the 2 litre 8v (exactly the same unit in the mk3 golf gti), the performance and economy are pretty good but will be blunted a bit with an auto box, i m fairly sure the 16v never had an auto option, theres also a 1.9 tdi, again not sure of auto on that one either, if you really want an auto box the v6 is the one to go for.

Thanks for your input quad_rings!

A friend of mine had an A4 with a V6 engine (2.4? 2.6?), also with an auto box and was quite lively.

I've seen a couple on autotrader with a decent spec, so will be investigating further.

Any insurance co. recommendations for these older Audi's, or is it the usual Tesco, Direct Line etc?

Cheers for now

ive got my 80 2.0e insured with tesco, they really are good, by far the cheapest quote i had by a long margin, i also forgot to mention there was a 1.6 80 that came out in 93-94, but i m fairly sure it didnt have the option of an auto box.

Thanks again QR

I tried Tesco, quotes of 530 ish for 2.6 V6 auto Fully Comp, low 400's if TP. The 2.0, both 8/16 Valve are approx £70 less FC

A bit cheaper than I thought it would be for a grp15 car. Saying that my 911, grp20 is £650 FC, unlimited miles. Go figure....

Cheers
