Because of Kahn’s obsession with leaving a legacy at relatively short notice , we have to change our perfectly suitable ( for our needs ) 2015 Tiguan TDI 177ps for a ULEZ compliant car .
This BTW is NOT a discussion about the ULEZ
We like the Tiguan it suits our needs and I am not interested in any other brand . in our searches , we have come across a 2018 2lt BiTDI with around 240ps , as you can imagine it is quite quick .0-60 around 6 sec
My question is , and I would like real experience answers , has anyone got or driven this particular engined car or any VAG car with this engine , and had issues
I understand it is used in some Transporters , but in a different set up .
I know early engines had problems with the EGR which allowed water to enter the oil system , thereby causing excessive bore wear , this car is later than ones with that issue .any other issues ?

I’ve got the bi-turbo in my T6, standard it’s a 204, I’ve got a Revo map and it pushes out circa 250 now.

It was the 180 bi-turbo that had issues, egr internal corrosion was causing engines to drink oil and it’s very well documented.

On the newer engines with revised egr’s then that’s not an issue, but the egr’s do clog up over time and eventually block.

To keep the egr healthy and clean I only use premium diesel and a squirt of Millers or Hydra Maximus. I’ve never had any issues at all with my egr, I get less regen’s and never get any warnings about dpf levels.

Bi-turbo has more bottom end and more top end than a single turbo VAG TDI. Much better 'throttle' response, but may I suggest watching some Darkside Developments videos by way of pre-purchase research. There are things to be aware of with such a high tech engine.

As with most modern TDIs, deletion of the swirl flaps and EGR is a must if you plan on keeping the car long term. Keep the DPF though as no one likes a smog screen.

Bore wear isn't an issue, but maintenance can be as the twin turbo engines are properly crammed in there.

If the car is doing mostly city work, a more basic engine is a wiser choice.

The car would have been mostly out of town commuting , and also ,the reason I was attracted ,towing a caravan , in the end there were issues the dealership wouldn't attend relating to MOT advisories ,so the car was dismissed . But , whilst looking around we looked at a Skoda Karoq , essentially a Tiguan with a different frock ,and although 150ps (same as our first Tiguan ) we rather liked it ,top spec lots of toys , so the deal is done .

I've got the engine in my Arteon 4 Motion.

It likes a drink compared to the 150/190 engines - not sure if thats due to the extra output or the 4x4, but for a 240hp heavy car actually its not the worst. I crack over 50 on a run and 35ish around my local town.

Its effortless on the motorway and always plenty is reserve. Its very easy to accumulate speed quickly and with no fuss. The DSG is pretty good in everyday use, I wish I could make it change up 100rpm later though it would make it perfect.

Cars with DCC are a good shout, I love it, big wallowy bus for ferrying about our son, or I can set it rock hard for a back round blast up to Knockhill to watch races.

As with all VAG TDi of this gen they seem to have water pump issues. Mine will be going back to the dealer for this next week...
