My 20 year old son is looking for a new car and I have been championing a B9 Audi A4 2.0 TDI Manual Saloon.

We are looking at 2016 and 2017 models with up to 70k on the clock. He intends to keep it for 3 to 4 years.

What is there reliability record like and are there any inherent faults. The car will have a full service history.

What are they like as an ownership experience.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

We've got a 2.0TFSI B9 Quattro Avant and it's never let us down, but in the 18 months we've had it it's done about £1,500 in warranty work. The main one being it was loosing coolant, turned out to be the water pump. It does maybe 5-6k a year. Compared to the multiple VW and Skoda company cars I've had doing at least 20k a year, it's a let down.

If he's ok with the badge, I'd get an Octavia.

In the end and influenced by Dad he went for a 2017 Audi A4 2.0 TDI 190 S Line.

Its an Audi Approved used car with a low mileage. I felt it was the best option into high mileage compared with the Alfa, BMW and Jaguar alternatives that were considered.

The S Line Trim looks great and I think really lifts the desirability of the car. It’s like the Ghia badge on 70’s/80’s Ford’sclap

A good choice. We have owned a 190 Tdi avant stronic s line for 5 years and it’s built like a tank whilst doing 55-60 mpg on a run. It still looks great too.

I'm not sure if they're still doing it but the Audi All In thing is pretty good value and includes 2 years warranty. I've got it on ours and even though I get my labour at £45 an hour at Audi it's still good value.
