Polo idle problems

My S-reg Polo, 1.4 16v has started having a problem at idle 
. It won't idle below 1000prm and sometimes sits anywhere inbetween 1000 and 1300rpm! It used to idle at ~850rpm but won't any more. It's almost like the throttle's stuck open slightly. Seems to run fine once going though.
I've had a cursory glance round the engine bay, and took the air filter off to have a look down the throttle body, but couldn't see anything obvious. Throttle opens/closes fine, with no noticable sticking. Any ideas folks as to the cause?
Frankly I'm fed up with cars atm, as this is the third problem in a row we've had as a family. Both my mum's and dad's head gaskets went within a month of each other. Spend all last weekend fixing dad's (see thread in engines section). Bah, I should take up knitting or something less problematic.....
