Dear all,

Anyone have experience with inspection service with audi? My a6 avant needs inspection service and they want £218 for it. Last time the inspection service they done was for £40 but they claim it was only break oil topup not full inspection.

What pricing you are looking normally for this and as I’ve asked if they price match halfords or kwick fit they said no and only price match other garages that can give me written quote proving that they use authentic audi parts… I thought it’s inspection…?

Thanks in advance

The inspection service includes oil, oil filter and pollen filter.

My local dealer is £279 for the same thing (Audi S3). I get it at an indy now the car is out of warranty though (£70).

You sure it’s not £170? I don’t know any VAG independent that will do an interim service and a pollen filter for £70. Going rate at non franchise dealer is £310 for full service and £145 for an interim. That’s with genuine parts.

Edit - their labour rate must be £40p/h. I really can’t see it being £70, but happy to be proved wrong.

First Audi ownership for me and this caught me out.

They told me it was a safety inspection so I did just an Oil Service which was due. They neglected to tell me it would not reset the service alert on the dash until I was picking it up at 5pm. So have been stuck with a beeping car ever since.

Needed brakes recently so tried them again and they told me the Major Service is overdue. Quoted something like 480. Because the Oil is not due again yet, I queried the cost of just the Inspection on its own, and it had gone up from something like 140 to 220 since the last time it was in.

When I queried what would get done they looked mine up on the computer and spark plugs etc all not due. So as best ad I can work out the Major Service would get me an Oil Service (not due) and a pollen filter, and the Inspection on its own it seems would get me just a pollen filter!

Seeing as its fairly old will prob move over to independent servicing

Audi dealership said this is inspection and not include oil change

Certainly sounds too cheap.

As my S4 has only done 3k miles since the last service and given an oil service is basically an oil change, I decided to do it myself - the oil + filter cost me £75 so, at £70 for a service they'd be paying me to do it.

S4 may hold more oil than S3...

Any sort of service for £218 these days sounds like a bargain to me.

Called audi to check price for full service and they quoted me 449.50 inc pollen change

Checked full service with halfords its 229.99
Checked with kwik fit 212.30

Anyone know cheaper quotes that i can use to price match audi as they wouldn’t match halfords or kwikfit ?

Also when they say genuine parts , surely they use same oil like castrol?

Edited: just called vwfs and they confirmed that using kwik fit doesn’t breach any warranty or contracts which is great, franchise garages can stuff it with their 120% up mark

S3 basic service kit here (not including pollen filter) for £66.41. There’s not a VAT registered Indy that would supply those items and a pollen filter as well as perform the service for £70.

It's a German engineered car. Why would you let Halfords or kwik fit near it? They can only work on fords or Vauxhall's. Let's face it, they cant even manage that correctly.

It depends on how much you value your car. I'd only be using a VAG specialist.

There is nothing special about maintenance on a VAG group car, they are no different than any other car.

Besides Fords are German engineered too so by your thinking should be beyond Halford's ability to service.

You’ll have to explain what is meant by that statement, because I think there have been a lot of eyes rolling after reading that. Unless of course you mean you need the main dealer servicing so they can keep an eye on imminent failures, correct dodgy software, cover rust with grease etc etc.

Or is there a magical German fairy dust tank that needs topping up?

It’s a service, pretty much the most simple thing anyone can do on a car.

Undo sump plug, let oil drain, unscrew old oil filter, screw on new one, refit sump plug with new washer, top oil back up to required level.

It's a 10 minute job on a ramp, perhaps slightly longer if there’s an under tray to remove.

Whilst a ‘german engineered car’ used to mean a good thing, modern German cars are no better than French stuff.

To an extent, but this is a very basic non technical job So some may use Halfords' etc.I would prefer a small independent. Similarly, a friend who always buys new Honda regularly from a old established main dealer 1) Swapped a one year Civic for new when he read the servicing quote 2) Analysed what they actually did for an interim service; as it was so minimal, started going eleswhwere.

If a "proper" service can be done for less than £218 I'd love to a see a breakdown of the parts cost, labour rate and time taken. Especially if it all includes the dreaded 20% VAT.
