Trying to locate: Skoda Octavia LB10 OMR
Discussion
It seems there's no way of finding out the current owner of the car without breaching all sorts of rules, and given this site has a huge reach, I was hoping someone here might know the owner of the car. Nothing sinister involved. It changed hands last year and I want to make an offer on either the car or the plate.
I've put all sorts of notifications up on autotrader, gumtree etc, but given the age of the car I think there's less chance of it coming up.
Can anyone help?

Really helpful forum of enthusiasts, and not only for vRS models. It'll be a long shot though.

Is this car on a private plate? If it’s the plate the car was registered with then you can’t just buy the plate or transfer it off the car.
As far as I'm aware it's the plate the car was issued with.. why wouldn't it be available for transfer? Thanks for the suggestion re: the Skoda forum. A long shot is the only shot I've got. I scour for sale ads at least once a week seeing if it comes up for sale!

Because you can’t do that. The registration that comes with the car stays with the car and cannot be transferred off. If a car has been off the road or out the country for many many years it’s possible the reg has been reissued or sold by the DVLA and the car will get a new one but this is pretty rare.SteBrown91 said:

That's just not true - put the plate on retention and DVLA will assign another number. There's nothing different about a 'private' plate that enables it to be transferred.MrBen1 said:

I see - I was always under the impression that the DVLA wouldn’t let you do that but I’m always happy to be proven wrong. I’m guessing it’s because 99% of the time there’s no point in doing it. SteBrown91 said:

If you decide to replace it with a “private plate” that you have bought, taken off retention or transferred from another vehicle then the original assigned plate reverts back to the DVLA and you cannot sell it
It is held for reissue by the DVLA back onto its assigned vehicle ( or another ) by them but you can’t sell it as you never owned it

My understanding of the rules is that the original issued plate assigned to a car is not a “private plate”

You can request it’s listed in an upcoming auction though. If you decide to replace it with a “private plate” that you have bought, taken off retention or transferred from another vehicle then the original assigned plate reverts back to the DVLA and you cannot sell it

If the plate is non transferable then it'll say so on the V5. It's true that plates stay with the car, but only until they don't. If you don't take a "private" plate off, then it stays with the car too. All I'd be asking the owner to do is transfer the plate on to retention and transfer it to me. Or sell me the car and let me deal with it.

In theory I could buy a car and say it gets issued with e.g MY22 BMW. I can pay £80 to retain the plate and DVLA would issue a new one, this is related to where the car is registered so here in Surrey I would get e.g GU22 BMW. This plate can’t be retained as it will be marked as non transferable.
I could then put a cherished plate on e.g 123 BMW but when this comes off it is 99% likely the GU22 BMW plate would be assigned but could never be retained for use on another vehicle.

What makes you think it'd be marked as non transferable?I've only ever seen that on very old 50/60/70 era cars
