Hi.

For a while now I’ve been getting an odd knocking noise front the front of my car (RS3 8P) the most annoying thing is that it comes and goes. So on one drive it may be really prevalent and then you’ll park up come back and it will have completely gone. The sound is made at the same speed as the wheels are rotating and does not occur when stationary in neutral.

When it is occurring it does seem to get worse with breaking. And a new symptom thats only been happening the last couple of weeks is a sort of low frequency vibration / rubbing feel when letting off the power at low speeds.

I’ve had a garage look over the car for anything obvious but there were no blatant issues. I had most of the front bushes replaced as they were getting old to see if that had any effect but it did not. Same goes for a suspect CB joint that was a little sloppy.

I’ll post a link to a short video where you can hear the noise. (Skip to 2:49 for noise)

https://youtu.be/pyVNaoy-P5k

If anyone had any ideas on what to try checking or if they’d experienced anything similar I’d really appreciate some advice.

Thanks.

YouTube is blocked at work, but I'm going to throw front top mounts into the hat as a first suggestion.

The reason I say that is because I use genuine RS3 top mounts on my MK5 Golf (same chassis as 8P), and approx 1 year into their life, they start knocking when steering at slow speeds. They also make rubbery 'squelch' noises over speed humps. I will check out the video later on to see if the noise is familiar.

I know it sounds far fetched that a simple bearing in a rubber bush can knock, but if you research how these mounts are constructed, it's yet another area where VAG biased their mountings more towards NVH than performance/life span.

If not the top mounts, it could be the infamous subframe movement. VAG issued dealers with some special spacers in an attempt to fix the subframe clunking, but it was temporary at best.

Anyway, good luck with it. Chassis knocking is notoriously difficult to diagnose in person, let over t'internet, but that's a couple of areas for you to look over in the meantime.

I'll give the top mounts a check but the noise happens whether you're steering or not. It also seem to be coming from lower down. But let me know what you think after you've had a chance to check out the recording.

Cheers.

Just listened to the video and that kind of sounds like a rotational knocking from the drivetrain. I think a trip to a specialist is in order here as that could be caused by a number of things.

Next time you take the car out, try turning the HVAC completely off. Many VAGs make HVAC actuator noises behind the dash, which can sound like knocking from the engine bay, so it's worth out-ruling that first.
