Oh deary me!

Thankfully this isn't my car, but our customer services mgr. Mk5, 105bhp same as mine, and I must say, a guy who would not beat the pants off it like I do. Only 6 months old too. Apparently, the flywheel split somehow, made it's way into the gearbox, and chewed it up!

Mine had to have the airbag sensors replaced. The light came on, dealer plugged it in, new sensor and done.

Of the rest of the fleet (all Mk5s).... A drivers door dropped on it's hinges, so is now mis-aligned enough to have to lift-and-pull, while anothers rubbery covered interior parts is starting to peel off.

Anyone else having problems?

Friend has a 53 reg Touran. They'll basically have to sweep the thing out of the garage soon that many interior parts have fallen off.

Though i'm well aware that VW aren't perfect I feel I should say that my MkV GTI is coming up on 6k miles now and has not missed a beat, and nothing has fallen off yet!

They obviously don't make them like they used to. My 9 year-old 105k mile Corrado VR6 is still going strong, and on its original exhaust and clutch too.

They definatley don't make them like they used to !

Have just taken my wifes Mk1 Golf GTi off the road for a full restore & engine transplant (at 243,000 miles & still going strong mechanically). But I was parked next to a Mk3 GTi (on a K plate) the other day which was more rusty ! Saw a P reg Polo at the weekend which had some fairly serious rust below the rear lights too - can't see the new VW's making it to 25years old in the same condition as older VW's !!!

VW seems to be heading off down the Mercedes route of trying to destroy its reputation for solidity by cutting corners to make a few extra €.

A bit of a Bump but an update none the less.

The gearbox car is fixed but now the engine light and airbag lights are on. The airbag light has come back on in mine with the engine light flashing on now and again?!

Since then 3 of the golfs have now got damage (not really VW's fault) as we are on and off building sites all day, they do get a bit of a hammering. I had to be towed last week as it ground out on me! (no apparent damage).

The fleet of Passats are nearly due for the rest of the team. Can't wait to see how long they last .

Unfortunately you can't tell what's VW or a bad bodywork repair just from a one off sighting, could easily be a bad repair. Most Mk1 golf rusted away years ago, the Mk2 was better, but you only see loads of those as people have spent time an deffort on them, something few people do to a Mk3.

I've got a 120k mile 1991 G40 that is on its original clutch and supercharger. It pulls like a train and sounds awesome. For me it's got to be one of the best cars I've driven and likely to. Forever in awe.

Does anyone else find first to second gear in the golf a difficult change it often causes me problems when trying to change quickly in the mk4? How much do you think I could insure a mk1 gti 17 yr old jsut passed?
