I'm speccing an RSQ8. I like the carbon version because it has carbon fibre extras, more so than the vorsprung version as far as I can tell.

Should I get steel brakes or the carbon ceramic brakes? I've only ever thought that CCBs are useful on the track but this is a heavy car so is it worth adding CCB brakes or should I stick to steel brakes?

CCBs need some heat in them before they really work well so would they really stop the car more quickly?

CCBs are preferable for track use and also to reduce unsprung weight - I think that on an RSQ8 these two issues are slightly academic so I would save the money.

[Herbert Diess] You should fit Carbon Ceramic brakes because they are the most profitable the best for your car! [/Herbert Diess]

I had a C6 RS6 with ceramics and for a big heavy car they are mostly fantastic. If you're going to be driving it hard they have no noticeable fade in road use and they last a very long time.

The only negative other than the cost is sometimes if you need to stand on the brakes in the wet you get nothing for the first instant till the water clears which can be rather unnerving if you need to do an emergency stop.

Edit: They don't really make you stop quicker for a one off emergency stop, if they are cool it could take even longer. They do as I said have virtually no fade though which is really great.

I've had a car with ceramic brakes for about 10 years now so I'm happy using them on the road and track. I reckon you're all correct in that ceramics are only really useful for the track and they're not worth it. They're more likely to squeek as well, which you don't mind hearing on a supercar or very fast sports car but on an suv maybe you don't want to hear that!
