Looking to buy a S5
Discussion
I’ve had one since last November. I love it, think it’s a great mix of pace & comfort. For a family car it’s pretty ballistic in dynamic mode.
Averaging 28mpg (on the computer) so far, probably less in reality. Think my only options are metallic paint & virtual cockpit. Don’t feel it needs anything else really. Suppose folding mirrors might be nice.
Haven’t heard many horror stories regarding reliability, however my drivers window is getting a bit noisy going up, and window regulators seem to have been a fairly common issue with Audis for a few years. It’s an approved Audi so will get it checked when it’s in for a service.
If you get one, check the airbox. New air filter is only done every 60k miles, and they are notorious for collecting detritus - mine was an absolute mess of leaves & crap. Five minute job to open & hoover the airbox, dealers should really be doing it……

Had 4 B9 S5s - 2 coupes a soft top and a sportback and can highly recommend them. They really suit Navarra Blue or Daytona Grey.
Fuel consumption is a bit savage but that's not going to be a complete surprise. I averaged 25mpg.
Only the last one I had was fully specced with head up display pan roof BnO sound etc. Fitted a full Milltek that sounded incredible. I geuinely regret not buying it at the end of the lease.

That's a nice looking motor i looked at the S7 but its to big and I am coming from a 635D which are high spec as standard.
I had assumed folding mirrors was standard fit ,do they all have apple play and folding rear seats ?
Mine has both, I think standard but probably worth double checking. Car play is wired by the way, need to use a charging cable, but there is plenty space in the armrest where the USB plugs in for your phone. Assume everything is an option, download a brochure from the period and work out what you 'need' it to have and what you'd 'like' it to have, and be prepared to be flexible
Some option packs will add several features you might want (e.g. memory seats IIRC gets you electric fold mirrors and auto dimming glass, or at least it does on the B8) but you get the idea.
Pillarless windows really don't like being grabbed by elderly relatives prizing themselves out of the seats - it's the usual culprit for damaged window regulators, along with yanking frozen shut doors open in the depths of winter when the auto drop feature won't work. Had mine many years and only 1 regulator has got noisy enough to demand attention.
Anything ex-lease is unlikely to have much in the way of kit, so worth looking at private sales as you might get lucky and find one that was well specced by the first owner.
The one advantage of recent changes to emissions regs was the options list got much shorter/packaged into packs, as each configuration had to be tested separately, so OEMs had to rationalise the options lists to avoid repeating expensive type approval tests.

That must have sounded utterly epic! I have an older TT in Daytona Grey, an amazing colour in the sun & definitely easier to look after than Navarra……

Looking to but a S5 sports back around 2017 and 40 k mileage . As i am new to AUDI i am looking for any info on spec, reliability etc , especially the later turbocharged V6 .
I had a 2018 S5 coupe for 3.5years from new. Only one issue in that time, the antenna for the emergency call button failed.. Other than that no issues with reliability.
The S5 comes with a fairly good spec as standard.
I added on:
Comfort and sound pack
Driver assistance pack
Privicy glass
Virtual cockpit
Electric mirror
Carbon inlays
Flat bottom steering wheel
All the options really come down to what you want/ need.
Personally the carbon inlays and flat bottom wheel make a big difference to the look compared to standard, giving a much sportier feel.
My gripe with the S5 (and every S-line Audi I've owned/ been in) is the suspension is too firm. Its not a particularly comfy ride.
Such stylish cars, big improvement (especially the interior) over the previous generation. Engine sounds great but overall lacks character compared to the B8’s supercharged V6 in my opinion. I find them to be bit too refined.
Is it due to the quattro system that they get poor mpg? Compared to say bmw’s B58.

As someone mentioned above does it have to be an S5 as opposed to an S4? I personally think the front end of the S4 is much nicer with the more aggressive headlight design. You were also able to get the black pack on the S4.
Out of all the S4 S5 variations I think the S4 Avant is my personal fav.
A thread here on those of us who had the cheap leases - its lengthy but you might be curious to read. I would say the Audi Sport forum is a better bet though.

Here is the other two I had - cab in met black with red leather and a SB in Manhattan Grey with black leather.
