Hi all, the Audi speakership has suggested new rear brake pads and discs for c£600.

I've asked a local independent and they are quoting even more for original Audi parts or about £350 if using Pagid parts.

Any advice on how much I should be looking to pay and if Pagid is worth going for?

Labour should be 1.1-5 hours tops for a set of discs and pads. Pagid, if from Euro Car Parts, are best avoided. I've got Brembo discs and pads all round on my S5 and they're wearing well. They've been on the car for 4 years and over 20k miles and loads of life left in them (I had the wheels off recently so gave them a once over) and the discs don't go rusty like the OEM ones do.

I found you could do 2 sets of pads to 1 set of discs on the front, but the rears had an awful lip on them after 1 set of pads so ended up changing the discs as well.

Depends on what model you've got in terms of likely cost - I paid less than £80 for a set of front discs, rears were more at £94 a pair. Pads £73 and £48 respectively. Those were 2018 prices though.....they were sourced from carparts4less.co.uk (ECP again) with one of their heavy discount codes (there should be a good one around Easter bank holiday). Just be wary of them offering the wrong fitment in terms of size.....

Depends on the model.
I’ve never had an issue with Pagid stuff, I was always under the impression it was one of the better reasonably priced brands, not sure if this has changed lately?
Eicher was always the one to avoid from Euros.

Any independent will do rear discs and pads in half an hour. I can do them on my drive with no air tools and a Trolly Jack in 45 minutes. That's with an electric handbrake.
Very basic stuff.
Pagid stuff is OK and cheap from ECP.

Pagid is just an ECP brand name for standard Chinese stuff. It used to be a UK brand, now it’s just a licensed brand used by ECP to flog cheap parts. Any Pagid made in Germany is the ‘proper’ stuff

Can be OK but there’s better stuff out there

1.2 hours on last bill for discs and pads but labour rate at my Indy is cheap as

Hi all, looks like part of my initial post got chopped off.

The car is a 2018 A5 Quattro - automatic with the electronic handbrake.

Would this info change any advice?

Sounds like Pagid is one to avoid, will see what other brands the garage can do.

I take it the Audi stealership i price is too much to pay for OEM parts?

If you have a photo of the build sticker from the service book (or the boot around the spare wheel area) I can probably decode enough info from the 3 letter codes to tell you which size discs and pads you need (don’t need the VIN so blank that out if you want)

The Audi cost will be predominantly higher due to their labour rate. There’s often a ‘fixed price’ option on the Audi website so can be worth checking that’s what they’re quoting you

Pagid are fine, Audi occasionally fit Pagid as OE parts. They fit whatever is cheapest!

Pagid is fine, and if you can fit rear discs and pads in 30 minutes you are doing very well, we allow 1 hour and take 1 hour, no point in rushing about

I'll take that, but I've noticed sometimes a job just goes so well, your finished before you know it.
Certainly no point rushing if you want to charge an hours labour!

Pagid is indeed an Audi OE supplier. Nothing wrong with their kit:

https://pagid.com/about-us/

I've ~15k on the back of mine on Pagid discs/pads without issue.

I'm a bit surprised by the Pagid enthusiasm from trade folk...

Admittedly my opinions of Pagid are from a few years ago, but my recollection when I investigated properly (I was working in vehicle legislation at the time) was that OEM Pagid is not produced in the same factory as ECP Pagid (the former being made in Germany, the latter in China under a licensing agreement for the use of the brand name in the UK)

I tried some of the Pagid pads (on OEM discs) on my S8 and needed to file the bloody things to fit the calipers, and even when fitted they lasted less than 10k miles before they were squealing like mad unless they were steaming hot - on investigation they were crumbling on the edges of the pads, which was rather disconcerting! The quality may have improved, but I've had no issues with what's currently fitted to the S5 so see no reason not to stick with them.

They probably are made in china, i've not looked recently but they are one of the few brands we don't have an issue with we refuse to fit Apec unless absolutely needed and certain cars we only fit OEM. In fact most manufactures are cheaper than Pagid, BMW genuine are cheaper than Brembo, the only thing that OEM are expensive for are the pads, Ford and Landrover are really cheap on the trade club. VW have started to do kits and they also have a 4plus range which can be cheap, however they won;t supply 4 plus parts for Audi as it devalues the braded.

I went genuine with my S4. Got a friend who got trade from TPS and got a indie to fit them.

Originals lasted 45k so hopefully won’t change them again in my ownership as they were still not cheap.

TPS only offered us 5% on S4 brakes, we actually got our local Audi dealer to beat TPS when we ordered a complete set for an RS7

Franchise dealers get much larger discounts than independents, who again get more (on certain parts) than private buyers would before they enforced trade only.

This is why you'll occasionaly find a main dealer will be unusually cheap for discs. They sometimes get mis-priced in the "fixed price" offers too.

I've called a few Audi dealerships and they are all quoting the same price to me - so either that is a fixed price or they've got it on the system and will not move from it £584 seems like a lot when indie is doing it for £328 with Pagid parts.

I've tried different dealerships owned by different companies (Sytner, Jardine, etc).

So looks like Audi are controlling all dealer prices as they won't budge from £583.89!

Also none can tell me what brand of brakes they use
