Are there any official VW diagnostic procedure manuals?
Discussion
I've just bought a 2008 Golf, and I'm trying to find decent service information. I've discovered erWin, the official online VW service data site, but it only gives you removal/installation information for everything and some partially-helpful wiring diagrams, it doesn't give you any diagnostic procedures for dealing with issues in any given vehicle system.
Anybody know where I can find this info?
For my other two cars (Ford and Jeep), the factory service manuals contain pretty much everything you need - removal/install instructions for every component of course, but also connector pinouts and full diagnostic procedures, so if system X isn't working, start by checking for +5V on pin Y of connector Z, that sort of thing. I can't find any of that stuff for the Golf.
My specific issue is that the AC isn't working, although the button lights up and the system is definitely fully charged. I want to check that the high pressure switch is working properly, and on either of my other cars I'd simply look up the diagnostic information that would tell me what to look for at the connector and the terminals of the switch itself with my multimeter.

This should help:

but as above you need access to a VCDS cable (made by Ross Tech) or a cloned version to do much investigating in terms of probing into data to help diagnose the issue.
Hooky versions of ElsaWin gives you service instructions (or there's a Bentley manual from the USA for most models) which often includes diagnostic info - it assumes you have dealer level kit, however.

I use this for repairs - https://workshop-manuals.com/volkswagen/
And this for part numbers - https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/
Neither are easy to navigate, but with patience, you will find what you need.
Only the official dealer network tools and online resources are up-to-date and accurate, so bear that in mind.

Indeed, MK5 Golf is notorious for munching its compressor. Your symptoms match the failure perfectly.
Makes me sound like a right old preachy git but I maintain that simply leaving it turned on is key to longevity. We have an 08 Golf and the AC is left on. Been serviced 2/3 times in its life but the compressor is original and works fine.
There are quality replacements on the market for not mad money, fortunately
