My Scala went in for its first service today.Has done just over 17K miles.
Was told that the front pads were down to 3mm and discs need replacing, because they are lipped.
Apparently the pads are also down to 5mm at the rear, and rear discs may need changing as well in 3 or 4 months !

I am frankly astonished that these brakes have worn so quickly in a fairly low mileage.
Is this a normal thing on Skoda's? are the discs just cheap rubbish now?

Similar story on our 2017 F56 Mini Cooper - new rear pads & disks at about 15k miles and now at 17.5k the front brakes need doing. It is an auto which may account for some wear.

Brakes are a dealer money maker.
They like to sell you discs at every pad change. Tell them no and put a set of new pads in when required first time round. When it needs discs at second or third pad change take it to an indy, or diy, its not difficult if you are any way capable.

My 2014 Skoda Superb is still on its original pads/discs. 67000 miles. The rear pads were an advisory on recent MOT though!
Either the quality has gone down, or they are trying it on.

Take it to a halfrauds or kwik fit for a free brake check and see if they say anything.

Yeah cause they won't try to manufacture work for themselves.

I tried to just get the pads changed, but the skoda garage refused to do just the pads,so will have to get them done at an indy.
I had the discs checked by a mechanic, and surprise surprise nothing wrong with them!

The idea is to get the particulars and see if its the same or wildly different...

The mechanic gets a bonus for identifying the work and the service advisor gets a bonus for selling it to you. The service manager gets a bonus based on how much profit the service department makes. Pads and disc changes are fantastically profitable.

VAG cars are generally pretty good on brake lifetime, but clearly a lot depends on your type of use of the car and they type of driver you are. It's unlikley, but a possibility with going 17K between services is they'll be thinking you might not make it to the next service - some customers would complain if they had to bring the car between services because the pad warning liht came on.

However it's most likely the case that they're trying to steal your money.

My golf R rear brakes wire relatively quickly as I was using cruise control a lot. Apparently the brakes are applied by the system. Maybe.

If you don't use them much, the dealer will want to change them as the discs go rusty often made worse by pads or sliders seizing!
