Just had my car in for service (just before 3 years old) - both nearside wheels have serious cracks on the inside edge from I assume the extensive local range of potholes - naturally VW deny all obligation to deal with as warranty claim (only 18k miles) - anyone had any joy with this or is a waste of time as I expect

You could try suing the supplying dealer on the basis that the wheels aren't fit for purpose.

Tricky. VW don't know what the wheels have been subjected to, but to be fair you'd expect better.

I'd be talking nicely to the local dealer to see how the land lies. Perhaps a contribution deal could be set up.

Have you looked at the Golf R owners' club forum to see if it's a known issue?

Are these the optional 19" Pretoria wheels? If so, the wheels are known to crack under nothing more than normal use....usually it is a case of "when", not "if"....

also asking if you are on 18's or 19's ?

IME on our roads the point where you start seeing more wheel and tyre damage issues is 19's and 35 profile tyres.
18's and 40 profile dont seem to suffer as much.

This garage really is dreadful to deal with - the promised phone call did not happen and all emails ignored - finally managed to speak to service there who said it's not covered as I expected and then added it happens regularly and it's never covered under warranty and said I should have known that - no contribution will be made....

They will not even recover the car back to me...happy days

Thanks a lot VW

It seems to be quite a big problem in the US and if VW can get away with not replacing them there then they probably think it's hilarious that you'd even ask in the UK.

Welcome to VW (still under warranty) ownership.... The Pretoria wheels do have a very bad reputation for getting damaged easily as others have said. I know a few folks that have bought the CM wheels version and they've had no bother whatsoever. Not too pricey either.

I've seen that name pop up a few times, but little objective commentary to go with it.

Do they weigh 3 elephants each? Is it just that they're too new to have cracked/buckled yet?

If weight bothers you, put yourself and / or your other half on a diet. They do 18" Pretoria style wheels too. On the VWROC forum I've not read about anyone having problems. The VW ones on the other hand appear to be made from something not much stronger than glass.
