Due to a crappy company car policy, I am more or less limited to either an A4 or a Passat. As my previous experience of VW dealers was mind-blowingly awful (to say the least) I took the A4 option (besides, the old-shape Passat was not an especially attractive car, either). This time around, the new shape car will be a contender, versus the new shape A4, so I took a look at one in the local dealer at the weekend. 2 observations:

1. It's big, good looking, and a lot of spec for the money (edited to add; I have seen quite a few on the road now, and it really is a nice looking car from virtually every angle)
2. Interior trim feels cheap, cheap, cheap compared to my current car - perhaps explaining the latter part of (1)!

Oh well, I'll keep plugging for the Saab, but I'm not holding my breath...

you have to admit though it is a good looking car, the better the model you get the better trim quality you will get

My neighbor has had one of the TDI sports for nearly a month now and it's fantastic. It's definitely in a different class to the old model

I think its fugly short wheelbase (golf floorpan)and the overhang at the back gives it a fat ass , trim quality is crap like the new golf . vw are cost cutting just like everyone else and its starting to show.

The better model you get, the higher spec you will get...doesn't alter what plastics they use though, trim quality is the same.

Looks fine to me I would prefer buying a german car just now as I believe that they are far superior in both build quality and reliability than the other manufacturers.

I own a VW Bora just now and have had 2yrs trouble free motoring and 4 yrs of the same in the Golf it replaced.

I know that there have been some scary stories regarding dealers, but I can honestly say that mine has been superb with servicing and repairs done at short notice and no fuss. I have had parts fitted free and some small parts (worth pennies) given to me.

I will be staying with VW until something which is mutch better comes along.

That must be a uniquely Scottish thing - the consensus elsewhere (and my experience - I tried several) is that they're absolutely hopeless, both on the sales and the servicing side. VW is apparently aware of it, but a recent trip to my local dealer to look at the new Polo (potentially for my daughter) was as awful as ever.

The trim is exactly the same, might be a different colour, but it's still the same materials. You just get more stuff with the better models.

NO NO NO, look is you get the s model the trim is just plastic, if you get the se model the trim is just plastic, if you get the sport model the trim is aluminium and if you get the sel model which is not yet out and won't be until november-december you ge the wood trim

Yes, tiny bits of trim will be different colours (it's not real wood, and i doubt very much it's real metal), but the entire dash will still be made from the same plastic.

The new Passat is in a different league to the old one. It's a lot better looking and better to drive.

Quality has also gone through the floor...

I had one as a courtesy car for 2 weeks. The interior plastics are much much cheaper, they've taken climate control out of the SE, the carpets look and feel cheaper.

It's certainly better than a Ford etc, but it's not got the bank vault type interior of the old model that's for sure. Shame!
