Every now and again, my car, from cold judders badly when pulling away from a standstill. It then bangs into 2nd gear and will judder in every gear every couple of seconds until the car warms up - say about 5 mins. Then it settles down and drives fine. It does this whether in auto or manual mode and can go for weeks without doing it. It’s a 7-speed, 2014, Seat 1.6 tdi with 55k miles.

The juddering is pretty severe, feels like the whole car is shaking apart!

I was thinking mechatronics unit but no fault codes logged. This is leading me to think worn friction material, though the miles are low. Whatever it is, I’m expecting it to be expensive!

Any thoughts?

That is the zero maintenance dry clutch isn't it? So its not that it needs a service.

I remember reading about a multitude of problems with it when I had it in an Ibiza FR when it first came out, I never got a problem though.

I wouldn't think the clutch plates have worn out yet though.

First thing to try, if you have access to VCDS or know someone with it, is to run an adaption / calibration.

Yeah, Seat told me it doesn’t require fluid change etc.

I did the basic reset - ignition on, go pedal to the floor for 10-20 secs, ignition off, start car. Did seem to make the changes nice and smooth though that was only Sunday and it hasn’t done it again since. Will see how this week goes and see if I can find someone with full vcds.

No idea if dmf could be culprit. I’ve had the car since 20k miles, it’s not abused and I don’t do hard launches with it.

I run a 1.6 dsg Octavia as a private hire taxi.

It at 90k now and getting an occasional judder and noise when the pulling away on a hill and sometimes going from 1st to 2nd.

My mechanic says the clutch plates and flywheel are on there way out and usually only good for 100k.

It’s actually been happening for about 20k and not really for much worse I’m hoping it stays that was as I plan on changing the car later on the summer.

Edit I forgot the car occasionally starts to rock when stationary also if I move forward slightly it usually stops.

Clutch pack in those is known for premature wear and juddering/lurching.

That's likely what you're experiencing.

Thanks for the replies and info.

Well it did it again today and was pretty bad. Struggled to pull away from a standstill and then juddered on and off until it warmed up a bit. Then it drove fine.

A colleague I carpool with experienced it today and he’s an ex mechanic (albeit old school so doesn’t know DSG). He thought it felt and sounded like the clutch was struggling to grip. Replies on here seem to confirm that.

Not sure what to do now, I was planning on changing the car in a couple of months and a new clutch pack is an expensive fix.
