Hi all,

I am looking at a car shortly a VW Golf MK7 GTi 220ps manual 50k 66 plate.

I'd be moving from a piss boring MK8 Golf and have previously had MK4, MK5 GTi's, a MK7 Golf R and a MK7 Golf GTD.

Is there anything specifically I need to be on the lookout when test driving this car? If it makes a difference it'll be coming from a main dealer and other than being an Ex Demo has had 1 owner.

Any thoughts appreciated.

You can ask whether the thermostat housing has ben replaced. This is a weak point on these cars but since you've had a GTD and an R you may know this already. The thermostat housing was the only issue I've had on mine.

Performance Pack is worth having if you might get tempted to map it in future, just due to the diff. But if you do find one with it, make sure the LSD oil has been changed every 3 years.

Does it have DRC? If so worth checking the modes work and there's no knocking.

Love our 2015 Mk7 PP GTI - no plans to replace it any time soon, and aside from potentially being tempted by a newer 7.5 I know I won't find another with spec as good.

Shocks leaks is common with DCC.

Heater Matrix is another issue with the mk7 and the rear discs seem to corrode quickly.

Can I ask how you find petrol consumption with the MK7 Gti ? Dealer states 45.6 urban?

I average about 36 mpg for a mixture of A roads and town driving. Long motorway cruises I can push it over 40mpg easily. If you're heavy footed it can drop down to mid 20s. This is with a DSG gearbox. So it can vary quite a bit depending on your regular routes but that's the sort of ballpark figure you're looking at.

Tank averages for me can drop into the high 20s during winter, with a mix of local and motorway runs. Normally manage 30-35 tank average, and high 30s if taking it steady on a long run. Mine also DSG.

The trip computer is actually pretty accurate if you look at the 'since refuelling' page, as an idea of the tank average since it was last filled up.

I've put 30k miles on mine and averaged 33.6 over that time. Normal 95 RON. Get 330-350 out of a tank.

Rear seat rattle, easily gixed for pennies with foam tape. Thermostat will go at some point. Seat bolsters don't stand carelessness. Heater matrix can clog up (make sure it works, and blows reasonably evenly across both sides of car)
