Morning all,

I realise that vehicle diagnosis on the 'net is nigh on impossibe, but I am just hoping to get as clued up as possible on this.

The car is a Mk6 GTi. It has just nudged over 100k. On full throttle, up hill, I have noticed when the revs climb over 4k, they start to rise/flair faster then you would expect, and faster then it does on the flat / down hill. It may do this in other gears, I havent tested. The sensation is a bit like loosing traction, but I am assuming it is not that. It happens with enough repeataility that I can rule out oil on the road etc.

So I am assuming clutch? Having spoken to a few garages, at least one reccomended doing the flywheel at the same time? Is that likely to need doing? Do they often go at the same time on these cars? Would it add siginificantly to the cost?

Finally, what sort of ballpark can I expect to pay. I am waiting on three quotes from a range of places, but it could help to know if I need to get any more!

TIA for any help!

if it does turn out to be the clutch, it's best to get the flywheel done too whilst it's all apart. My mk6 gti is on 132k and only the clutch was changed by the previous owner in 2020. I believe the flywheel is rattling so it's something I need to get done. I would budget for around £800 to get both done including labour.

If the clutch is already slipping there will likely be at least some heat damage to the flywheel.

Thanks both.

Quotes for clucth + flywheel coming in between £1200 and £2000+ at the moment. The chap at the VW dealer said they had never ordered a flywheel for a GTi and said it was very rare for the clutch to go. But I don't know what else would cause the phenomenon I am experiencing?

I would expect a clutch kit with flywheel to be around £600 so shop around.

The genuine clutch is a Sachs part, so ~600 parts only sounds about right. From memory it's ~4 hours labour, so a little over a thousand is probably correct. Change the slave cylinder at the same time. VW branded parts (supplied by Sachs) will be more.

I thought the OE clutches were LUK, but Sachs did an OE standard kit that was technically stronger?

Could be wrong mind it was a few years ago I was looking at clutch kits for mk6 golfs.

Thanks for the responses.

VW dealer (where I usually get it service) seemed to think it was unlikely to be the clutch, and i couldn't replicate the issue so had put it down to wheelspin / diesel on the road...

But it re-occured last night, on a dry road, 6th gear and uphill. Same thing that the revs would climb faster then road speed increases, like the wheels were losing traction (accept they aren't)

Could this be anything other than the clutch?

Everything you has said sounds like a classic clutch.

Majority of cars that the dealer sees will be on their original clutch and new-ish. Wouldn’t surprise me if they don’t do many.

Try Mr Clutch, Kwik Fit and a few independents to get a feel for cost. I’d get a quote that includes the option of a flywheel or assume you need one.

If running standard power I’d imagine any decent brand would be fine.

Thanks all, now booked in with the plan to check the flywheel and change it if there is any question over whether it needs doing. Don’t fancy paying the Labour twice.

Got three quotes in the end. Cheapest was the place I’m using at £1185, with the priciest being over £2300 at the dealer. The dealer is competitive for servicing but definitely not for this kind of job!
