I'm looking for a 2017-20 Golf R.

Fairly fussy about spec - must be Silver or White-Silver Metallic, 3dr, DSG. Ideally, hi-spec but non-leather.

A few around, but wondering, is there any notable difference in the engine performance - specifically the sound quality - between the 2017/18 and 2019/20 models ?

many thanks

The 10ps difference in power isn't noticeable ,there's enough power and low end torque for such a marginable amount not to be significant. the GPF models do sound more 'muffled'. Many of the 'run out' 7.5's had the Akrapovic exhausts which sound good.

Is the Akrapovic a viable retro-fit?

They all sound like a dull 4 cylinder. If you have a DSG they sound like a 4 cyl. changing up very quickly to the next gear. I used to drive a 1983 Toyota Corolla 1.3 automatic and that sounded similar to a Golf R DSG.

The pre GPF option is just a back box, the GPF variant fits from the downpipe back. At circa 3k it's an expensive but a straight forward fit, VW won't supply Akrapovic unless it's for a car fitted with it from the factory, hence you will need the v.i,n number of a car with the system fitted at build. I've come across a few R's with a Powervalve system fitted, they're very good quality and a more cost effective option. https://www.powervalve.co.uk/
