Timing belt schedule on VW Up?
Discussion
Hello,
I aquirred a VW Up! about half a year ago at this point and after flipping through the service schedule and the service history i noticed the timing belt has never been changed (didn't notice this when buying it). The car is on 42,000 miles 14 reg so well past the recommended 5 year change, is this something i should do imminently or can i leave it for a while (i understand these engines are interference engines and if the belt goes it will knacker up the engine). And if i do need to do it imminently how much can i expect to pay for this job.
Thanks,
Zdos123

My erwin account is Audi rather than VW, but this is the same 1.0 3cyl in an A1:
FYI:
Erwin is factory data, not a franchise operator (main dealer)
There is no mention of 5 years because this is not a VW requirement
Most Ups will never get to 140k, and there will certainly come a time when doing the belt becomes a sensible bit of preventative maintenance (rather than a scheduled requirement).

The great UP!/CitiGo/Mii debate!
As said above VW HQ have the timing belt down for first inspection at 240,000 km and to only replace if there are signs of wear or fraying etc. I believe the PR blurb VW put out for this engine made a big deal of it having a "lifetime" belt but then many engines have very long timing belt intervals that have gone south (stares at EcoBoost).
I also recently bought a Mii and the last service done by the garage for the previous owner in the Summer noted the timing belt was recommended to be changed at 5 years (AutoData service schedule) which the car passed while on sale there and was done before I picked it up. To be fair it looks like a ~2 hour or less job and there is no water pump to worry about as that runs off the cam on the other side of the engine. I would guess ~£300 would get it done?
