Just looking for a bit of advice on timing chain…mine has got 89k at the minute and hearing a bit of a rattle… can anybody advise what to listen out for? Don’t want to leave it till last minute…I’m wanting to keep it for while so I know I should probably do it soon??? Thanks in advance.

How does the car's history fare against the maintenance schedule? If it's overdue a new tensioner and a rattle has developed, I'd get it done asap.

They usually rattle badly when you start the engine when it's cold especially if the car hasn't been used for a few days. My Mercedes timing chain is on it's way out and after idling for 10 seconds or so the clicking noises start because the oil pressure has dropped.

I don't know about VAG diagnostics but with Mercedes you can read the camshaft adaptation value to give you an idea as to how much compensation is being done
