Mk5 Golf knocking noises
Discussion
So I know its a long shot but the missus has a golf falling to bits with some noises. It's done 158k now so its probably had its day this car, as much as I think it could get more it's becoming a money pit.
One noise seems to happen when closing the drivers door, on the passenger front wheel I can hear a knocking sound when shutting the door.
Also when driving I've noticed a crunching noise when sometimes going up a gradient or round tight turns, this is definately getting worse.
Ive read sway bars are a common fault, it doesn't handle great, and shudders a bit coming into roundabouts etc.

Checking the usual suspects like anti roll bar links would be a good place to start.
If the anti roll bar bushes themselves are the same across the Mk5 platform then they are not designed to be changed and come with the new roll bar, which requires a subframe drop.
I’ve just done one on a 2008 Gti.

This is my concern with it as I've read into the subframe issues. If the anti roll bar bushes themselves are the same across the Mk5 platform then they are not designed to be changed and come with the new roll bar, which requires a subframe drop.

It's got an MOT in February so I'm already contemplating what to buy to replace the whole car as I just can't see it getting through.
I spent over £500 chasing a knock on mine but it was only when going over bumpy surfaces.
Turned out to be play in the steering rack which wasn’t evident until the old rack was out and on the garage floor.
Lots of very common issues on them, all well documented on the internet.
I suppose just put it through the Mot and see what they pick up, it may pin point something other than guessing and firing the parts cannon.

I assumed they checked steering mechanism on an MOT.Turned out to be play in the steering rack which wasn’t evident until the old rack was out and on the garage floor.

The cars not worth 500 quid tbh!
