I'm in the market for a hatchback, budget around £3k. Looking at Golf or A3.

Looking at Mk6 Golf and would like some info and advice regarding the best to go for between the 1.4TSI !70bhp and the 2.0 TDI models. I see the TDI can have issues with the EGR, and whilst I'm pretty handy with the spanners, it looks to be a real ball ache to replace. I've also heard there can be tensioner issues with the TSI. How easy is that to replace as preventative maintenance?

The car will be used for a mixture of journey lengths and I'm not overly bothered whether it's petrol or diesel. Just really want to get in it and it starts and goes!

So any advice regarding the pros and cons of each to help me make an educated purchase would be great.

We have owned a Mk6 2.0 TDi (140) since new.

Had some expenditure at about 10 years/120k miles (EGR replaced, DMF replaced) but back to good form again.

600 miles on a tank of mixed town and A roads. Been a reliable car.

My Son's got a Mk6 1.4tsi, turbo (not twin charge) and it's been pretty good. Recently had to change the fuel pump controller but it was a cheap part (if a little tricky to diagnose), goes well enough and is a nice car to drive. Had no bother with the timing chain but it has only done around 60k miles.

Around 120hp IIRC but I understand the twin charge (turbo & supercharger) engine which is obviously more powerful can be troublesome, especially now that they're ageing?
