Help/advice!!! Gearbox issue 2010 Octavia vRS

Hi PH folk,

I have a 2010 petrol manual estate Octavia vRS. The gearbox crunches whenever changing into 2nd. Car has done 113000 which I don't think is much. My local, and admittedly rated and respected, garage, have said it probably needs a rebuild as 2nd gear synchromesh is likely shot. They haven't seen it, just diagnosed from what i've told them over the phone. Anyone experienced similar? Costs? Clutch was done in March/April so not that. Annoyingly was thinking of selling but can't with this!!

You could try renewing the oil (Redline seem to do a well rated one), but if the synchro is already badly worn...

They're probably right, It likely is.

Oil's cheap, try it and see but don't expect much.

Thanks folks, just had an unexpected mot which left me a bill for £1000... don't ask.
Gearbox is taking a backseat but think it will be a rebuild if I can find somewhere reasonable

An 02J rebuild isn't massively expensive, but it's probably another £1000ish bill by the time you add the "while you are at it" parts - a clutch, maybe a flywheel, rear seal, and the labour on top.

In case anyone's interested (unlikely!!) the car is finally being seen to. Fingers crossed they can repair 2nd or it's a recon box..
