Anyone know if the system shows the date a fault first appeared?

Took our Ateca in for an "All In" eligibility check yesterday - was a bit gobsmacked that it failed miserably!

Apparently none of the faults were present when the vehicle had a major service a couple of months ago (it's a service item to check).

Date, time and mileage are all logged as part of the fault code.

I damaged the rear door of my A6, I took it to a local body shop to be repaired. A while later it wouldn’t start so I called out Audi Assist, they showed me the fault code log which had a log of when the light in the rear door handle wasn’t working as it had been disconnected. That was about 18 months previous.

Thanks both - I got a copy of the list but it's undated, I think it's just a summary of the faults - it looks like a pageful, but there's several lines for each issue so not as horrendous as it first appears.

If they were there a couple of months then the warranty would still have been in force. None of the faults are apparent, so I'm suspicious the dealer just ignored them - a couple of issues have arisen with the car in the past and the dealer has been very quick to say not covered by warranty.

For us in the aftermarket world it only gives us time and dates if we go into each fault code and even then it appears to be car dependent.

I always thought that warranty work was paid by the manufacturer not the dealer so they were always looking for warranty work as it paid well?

I don't think that's the case - I've seen lots of complaints about dealers not being keen to do warranty work, fobbing people off with very long booking delays etc. I think the labour cost is very tightly cntrolled, and I presume the dealer doesn't make their usual profit on any parts used.

Plus it's a somewhat uncertain process - the dealer has to make their own decision and then if the manufacturer doesn't agree they won't pay the claim.

And that's once there's a clear repair - before that they have to do a diagnostic and I imagine most customers must kick off when asked to pay for that.

In our case the dealer has waived the diagnostic fee and said if any repair is necessary then we can "discuss" repair costs. So I'm torn - I don't want to make a fuss about them not finding these faults a couple of months ago in case they really weren't there! However it strikes me as unlikley that after 3yrs it could be all clear, then 2 months later have 5 faults.

My Q5 went in for a recall about a month ago, the dealer was keen for me to get it booked in to get done even though it wasn’t a safety recall. I presumed they got paid well for doing it and it wasn’t good customer service!

There's a reporting system that requires recall success to be reported - although I think that only applies to safety recalls, could be they follow the same process.

Is always good for dealers to get cars in - opens up an opportunity for them! Mercedes is doing a safety recall on 15yr old cars with sunroof's - it's throwing up some interesting vehicle health check reports!
