Considering Change to RS6
Discussion
I'm thinking of changing the Porsche for a "sensible Family car" and the RS6 is top of my list at the moment. Is anyone aware of any particular problems I should be aware of. I'm sort of under the impression that it's hard as nails but would be gratefull for any buying advise
Thanks in advance

Hi Mark - good choice.
Try over at www.rs246.com - plenty of owners to provide advice there.
I can't provide any specific help - other than you might want to consider all 480bhp of the RS6+ ....

Krusty, I've had my RS6 for two years, and can give you some insight into ownership.
Not the steer a 911 is, but for load capacity, discreet (debadged & dechromed) and rapid progress they are superb.
Take for instance my 1000 mile round trip to a supplier in Germany, 180mph on the way down, 280 kgs in the back on the return trip.
Depreciation is a factor, mines a January '03 which now has nearly 50k miles on the clock, reckon it's worth 35k private tops.
Maintenence, two sets of front discs and pads, one under warranty, one set of rear pads and discs under warranty. Expensive servicing, cambelt one due next is around £1.5k. Bear in mind it's a 190mph load lugger!
At the values they are now, £40-£45k for mid-low mileage ones very good deal.

I've got a test drive tomorrow and am pretty sure this is the route to go. I was initially looking at going into a 996TT but I'm a little disillusioned with Porsche residuals at the moment and with a new family member about to emerge at any minute the RS6 seems to offer the best of both worlds. One thing I will come back to you on though is that you've obviously had the limiter removed which is something I'd be looking at doignas well. Thanks for the Advice

I had an RS6 since new in March '03. It is a great car that does everything. May not ultimately drive as well as a Porsche or ride as well as a Merc but it comes pretty close to both.
It has been totally reliable and in 35K miles I have been through one set of discs which cost £600. Servicing costs are reasonable but I guess parts are expensive but so far it hasn't needed any (other than the discs)

From what I have read on rs246.com, the running costs of an RS6 are appaling, even compared to those you might be used to on a Porsche. One particular guy there claimed his mate's Ferrari 360CS costs LESS to run.
The problem is that Audi Customer Services are saying the Timing Belt has to be checked at 20K at a cost of just over £400 and that it needs replacing at 40K miles, costing over £1000. Hence, it may be a £45K car, but it has £120K car running costs!

Re. the timing belt, it does'nt need checking, previously needed replacing at 40000 miles, but now 50000. Daft statement whoever made comparing it to a 360cs, if I'd done 50k in two years in one of them, god knows what the running costs would have been!
Well the guy said Audi have changed the service schedule. The belt needs checking at 20K. If you don't have it done, and the bugger snaps, you're on your own. As I said, all gleened from reading rs246.com so I'm passing this information on second-hand. It's worth checking on though, surely?

Bit disillusioned with my Porsche experience really. Don't get me wrong the car was good. Too good, in fact you didn't really have to do more than point it in the direction you wanted to go. I was also taken in with the residuals spiel by the OPC. "These cars have Glacial depreciation" Well I guess we can blame global warming for that as well.
Anyway. It's off, I've bought the RS6 after a thoroughly entertaining test drive. Pick it up Saturday.

I looked at rs246.com a couple of times and felt it was full of c**p and wasnt informative at all.
For a more level headed opinion I found http://rs6.com/
far more informative.
Congrats on buy Krusty.
Had my RS6 saloon for 9 months now and no problems except one rear parking sensor failing (replacement under warranty). Service today cost £300 with thorough valet and loan of directors A6 (which was awful - steering you could move at low speeds by sneezing). Didn't expect much from the RS at the beginning but still look forward to each drive in it.
In saying all that, I may sell mine now as don't really need the extra space anymore and looking at 996TT, 997S, Noble M400 and cheap Gallardo (if that's possible!).

That's not very nice mal
The guys posting at RS246 are RS6 owners, are you saying the everyday experiences they are posting are full of c**p?
Anyhoo, thought RS6.com mainly catered for the U.S community?
