1.5 TSI Evo engine. Premium or Super unleaded?
Discussion
We’ve ordered a new Passat estate with the 1.5 TSI engine, and I’m idly wondering whether the fuel filler flap says only 95 octane, or 95 or 97. It’s no big deal, just a thought while I self-isolate
Had a 1.8T Golf years ago, and that definitely drove nicer on V-Power. Even if there’s no extra power or mpg, the smoother running was nice.

Putting in higher octane fuel than 95 won't make any difference to performance unless the ECU can advance the timing to take advantage of it.
I'm sure it'll run fine on V-Power, the only truly noticeable difference will be in the wallet

But the answer to my question about what’s on the filler flap is..?Putting in higher octane fuel than 95 won't make any difference to performance unless the ECU can advance the timing to take advantage of it.

I’ve been driving since 1982, so I’m fully aware of all the usual fors and againsts with this stuff. I’m only doing 9-10k miles per year now as opposed to over 30k until five years ago, so cost isn’t really a barrier.
I’ll probably do the sensible thing and try it out for a few tankfuls anyway, see what I reckon.

The asthmatic engine needs all the help it can get, give V-Power a try
I have one.
I have one.
We will. I’m not expecting anything racy, just need the load space and some worry-free motoring for a few years. Then I’ll see what I want/need. Was looking at E43s and 540i Tourings, but the running costs just aren’t doable at the moment. Shame.

I have the 1.5 TSi and the gearing is the thing that kills it, constantly dropping cogs to make it more efficient which makes it feel very sluggish.
I find the it runs a lot better on E5 than E10 too.
We had a (diesel) rental Passat estate, R Line, last September for ten days. I got into the habit of: stop/start off, white line warning off, sport mode on, before driving away. Otherwise, it was an unusable sludge bucket. I find the it runs a lot better on E5 than E10 too.
Our local fuel station is Esso, so I reckon I’ll be using their 0% E5.
My driving is on very mixed roads, at best, but usually on twisty turny country roads. The average for a tankful so far has been 46mpg, with just over 50 on longer runs, but still not dual carriageway all the way.
For a large estate car with air con always running, I’m happy with it.

Well, almost 12 weeks into our ownership, and it appears that super unleaded is giving about 2mpg more over a tankful. It feels a little smoother and nicer to drive too, so while I can justify and afford it, I’ll be using super.
But the answer to your question about what’s on the filler flap is..?Glad you're enjoying it. My Wife manages about 30mpg from her 1.5TSI Evo engined Kamiq, but she's a terrible driver and does mostly urban driving for work. I can manage 40 easy and 45ish on a run.
I tried it a few times on Tesco Momentum and it made bugger all difference.
My Golf R states it's 95 E10 compatible under the flap, but prefers 97+. In normal driving it's identical with 95 and economy is about the same, but it's flat as a fart with 95 when you're 'giving it some'.
