Any other owners of the Mk. 8 Golf on here? I've had mine for a week, and I'm struggling with the infotainment system, hoping some other owners have had the same issues and got them resolved, or found a way around them...

The cruise control on my previous (Mk. 7.5) Golf had a feature where it would detect if you were about to pass a car on the left, and brake to avoid that happening. On my new one it brakes when passing cars on their right(!). After much swearing I found a setting that tells the car what side of the road we drive on, it was set to 'drive on the right'. Changed it, and the cruise control worked fine on the next journey. However, this setting resets to 'drive on the right' every time I start the car. Any ideas how to make the car remember what side of the road we drive on?

It also has something called predictive cruise control which automatically changes the cruise control set speed based on upcoming speed limits. Does anyone know how to turn this off? It might not be so bad if it worked, but when on a motorway it keeps picking up random speed limits, changing the set speed and then braking, which startles following vehicles. Several times on the M25 it detected a 40mph limit, but changed the set speed to 25mph and tried to slow the car down.

When is the first oil change service expected on a Golf? After only 350 miles in the Mk. 8 it's telling me it's due a service.

I suspect the infotainment system has gone haywire as I don't believe it needs an oil change half way through the running in period.

Here's a picture of the most annoying car I've ever had.

Oh dear, not a great advert for the mk8! I would be straight on the phone to the dealer, although from experience they’re not that clued up but it sounds like they need to do some resetting and setting via their computers. I’ll stick with my ‘dumb’ mk5 biggrin

Where did you get your car from? Did you get it brand new from a dealer?

They drive on the other side in continental Europe and they also use KMH instead of MPH and 40 KMH is 25 MPH.

If it's advising a service it suggests the PDI hasn't been carried out in whole or in part, or as you say it's got a bit loopy. I have a loan mark 8 golf (not an R) and I hate the interface. The clock randomly changes. And not in hour intervals either. 33m, 46 mins. Every time you set off the clock has randomly changed. The previous 8 loaner also had the service advisory after 900 miles.

I would book it in and ask for a loan car while they sort out your niggles. smile

Yes, brand new from a dealer, they are taking it back this week to have a look at the issues.

Mine doesn't have your clock issue, but I agree the interface isn't great. I keep accidentally changing the volume or HVAC temperature when using the touch screen. If I can get it to remember we drive on the left, and work out how to stop it from changing the cruise speed and braking unexpectedly I'll be happy.

I appreciate one would get used to the new screens. I, like most prefer a few more buttons for the seat heating/climate. Good luck with the new car. It looks like a great package

When you registered your keys for the first time did you create an account so it’s aves your ‘profile’? Mine did an update after this and I’ve had none of the issues above.

The day I got the car I created a profile which allows me to check if the car is locked etc. from an app, but these issues persist.

I remember reading about the same issues (auto-braking when overtaking and kmh / mph conversion issues - both regional issues) in an ID3 review, and in a recent R one too - link to ID3 one here:

https://www.carthrottle.com/post/7-things-i-learne...

There was no solution there though - although they did say VW said a software update should fix it.

Thank you, interesting that a press car had similar issues.

I feel I could already write quite a bit on this, and only had my Mk8 (R-Line 150 bhp) for 6 days, and didn't drive it for 2 of them.

First journey after picking it up (literally 3 miles into it), BONG.! loss of 'Front Collision Detection', followed by a yellow triangle for the next 12 miles. Just stopping to pull into a car park, BONG! Loss of 'manoeuvre braking assist'...!

Over the next couple of days, it has lost 'lane keeping detection', 'ACC', 'Collision avoidance' and the most recent on Saturday was the passenger seat heating is on/off/on/off all by it's self...??!

The infotainment system is sooo s-l-o-w and buggy, takes several swipes to move the screen, sometimes works, sometimes just brings up the radio or satnav in Large Screen..??

Paid for a sunroof as an option (yes, this has stupid touch sensitive swipe/slide button thing also (hateful things), and the car keeps giving me a 'eco tip', to close the sunroof for increased economy (despite 'eco hints' being turned off. So I've paid for a sunroof, which the car wants me to keep closed..! 'Right..!!

This is a lease vehicle which will be going back in 6 months, if this was my own, it would have already made it's way back to the dealer for a refund. No-Way would I 'own' this car at the moment, shame as it drives lovely, but the tech, and mainly my interaction with all controls are horrible. Lights, Clima, Sunroof, Steering Wheel, touch screen, are all horrible to use, and way my distracting than my mobile phone. So much so, that I dread that I have to change the radio, heat my feet, turn the fan up/down, as it's terrible..!

Yes, it’s really poor. I’ve got an ID3 with essentially the same setup. Every adjustment you need to make is a multi-press saga through that wretched screen which is as you say, not pleasant to use at all.

My former car was a G20 BMW and I used to complain about that not having a dedicated button to turn the AC on and off. Now I’ve got a car that doesn’t have a dedicated button or knob for anything and it’s a terrible experience.

I've not seen one review of the Mk8 where the touchscreens / infotainment system hasn't been to some degree considered a step backwards, a problem, or a negative thing.

Along with a general feeling that overall quality has also gone down, it's really putting me off getting another Golf at the end of my current lease.

I think VW had a bloody good car in the Mk7.5 Good looks, good build quality, good performance, and even if it wasn't cutting edge, a good infotainment system.

Apart from the new one being a bit faster, VW seem to have thrown away a lot of those reasons for buying their car. It's not even as if the price has come down. You will now be paying £40k give or take a few quid, and you don't even get bloody heated seats anymore, which I've got to say I would really miss on a winters morning !!

Unless these issues are sorted by early next year, I'm gonna have to look elsewhere for my next car. :-(

To me there doesn't seem to be any valid excuse or reason to get rid of physical air con controls (e.g. temp and fan speed).

I've a cupra formentor that I'm currently in the process of rejecting for some reasons you mention and many more.

Currently it's applying emergency braking when I'm parking, causing the occupants to almost receive whiplash. Cupra UK maintaining they have no knowledge of software issues. It's becoming a joke.

I currently have a list of 55 software issues.

Unfortunately for them, I'm a software test manager.

Could be worse, next year all Euro cars will have speed limit awareness bonging away when limits (correct or incorrect) are breached.

Was only a matter of time, then it’ll be speed reduction software. Won’t be long before people suss how to code it out.

The biggest issue is that in my experience (BMW though, not VW) the speed limit detection is appallingly bad and if the car were left to its own devices to limit speed based on that poor detection it would be downright dangerous. On several occasions it's picked up a 5 or 10mph speed limit for an adjacent turn off (such as a private road or site) and shown 5mph limit on the dash...all whilst doing 60mph on an NSL A-road. If it suddenly decided to hit the brakes to slow to 5mph it would've been horrendous.

Being unable to turn these types of systems off in newer cars means I simply won't have anything new from that point on.

Also I would rule out cars now based on a lack of physical HVAC controls; how have manufacturers gotten this so wrong? Surely focus groups and whatnot must've picked up that these are massively unpopular?

I had another Mk. 8 Golf as a courtesy car when mine went in. That would constantly pop up with eco tips, despite eco tips being switched off; and every journey it would bong to tell me something wasn't working.

That's a real shame, I loved my Mk7.5 and the 8 would've been in contention when it comes time to change my current car. If it's as nannying/buggy as you say (along with the annoyance of the HVAC controls) that would be enough to rule it out for me. The one saving grace with the BMW is that iDrive actually works really well nowadays and the nannying, annoying stuff like Lane Keep etc can be turned off easily and they stay off when you restart so you're not constantly having to go through a routine to kill it all every time you start the car.
