New Passat TDi or used Phaeton TDi buying dilema
Discussion
Parents are looking to part ex their current Passat and have been looking at the new 2.0TDI Passat SE. With a few extras it's going to weigh in at near enough £20k.
They do about 15 - 20k a year and are intending to keep the car for about 10 years.
Would a secondhand Phaeton be a better bet? Local VW dealer has an 03 reg 3.0TDI for about £25k. The extra purchase price wont be a problem, but I don't want them to be stung with large bills in the future (replacing no doubt unique brake discs etc, and heaven forbid the auto box should develop a fault!)
What do you guys think?

New Passat is on a new platform.
If they like a quality luxury car, a Phaeton is on the same platform as the Bentley Continental GT (and the new saloon Bentley). Suddenly it seems a bit more desirable than the yawn Passat with the double-yawn 2.0 diesel.
But if they're the kind of old folk who seem best suited to a Hyundai or a Daewoo, a Passat probably makes 10x more sense in costs etc.
You could get the Phaeton and tell them it's the new Bentley diesel?
good luck
