Anyone own a 1.0T 3cyl VAG engined car?
Discussion
I have a Octavia 1.0TSI 110ps
I think it's brilliant, amazing even.
It's genuinely fun to rev and hear, is very quiet on the motorway, and with very careful driving I see 62mpg.
The Octavia has a low kerb weight (1150kg) so the TSI feels more than fine for everyday use. I wouldn't however want it in an SUV bodystyle. For example the Seat Ateca is around 1400kg and I really don't believe that such a weight is suitable.
I would say go for it depending on what you want it for and what your expectations are - all of my comments above are comparative to cars and engines in this class/type, obviously it's not going to have the same level of power and engineering as a BMW/Mercedes/Lexus unit.

My mother-in-law took delivery in December of a Polo 1.0T 115 R-line manual. She's come from a Golf VI 2.0 TDI 170 but despite that she's complimentary on the engine - it's the blind spots compared to the Golf she's been more concerned about. She says though she doesn't use 6th gear and does say she misses the shove when overtaking.
Other than that, she likes it.

I would have thought the gearbox would be 'adjusted' to compensate?
That's a fair point - I don't know the answer. The ratios in the Octavia are quite tall i.e it doesn't rev very much relative to the car's mph. The other factor is that SUVs have to punch a bigger hole through the air which causes drag. I haven't driven the 1.0tsi Ateca but my gut feeling is that it won't be a good combination. With the SUV craze I went for the Octavia which had a healthy discount. I seem to remember a Karoq SUV on the forecourt with the same plate and miles was £4k more.

One of our daughters has had the 115PS version in an Ateca for a couple of years. She's very happy with it - she thinks it's fast compared to the old technology 1.4 (not TSi) Golf she had before. I've driven it a few times and, while it's obviously not a ball of fire, it goes perfectly well. It's remarkably quiet. She uses it for semi-rural domestic and commuting use. It's a 6 speed manual and it's pretty highly geared in top - IIRC it's only doing about 2K RPM at 70 - I imagine you'd probably need to change down if you hit much of a slope though.
I had an octavia 1ltr 3 cylinder dsg for a couple of weeks while my 19 plate 150 bhp tdi passat was being fixed and it was brilliant. Have to say its a great engine. When I found out what we were getting I wasn't happy but soon changed my mind after driving it for a bit. Pulls really well was fine on the motorway all round a really good package!

Bought this for Mrs M, to replace the previous 4cyl version, with same power. Other than that, she likes it.
Pros: Love the 3 Cyl 'beat', it's very, very quiet, great in town and not unheard to have late 40s/early 50s MPG on M'ways, even when I'm driving...
Con: Struggles when fully loaded/into a headwind (but I do have 410bhp to play with normally )

Is that kerbweoght correct? Everywhere I look says 1800kg for the 1.0?! I think it's brilliant, amazing even.

My current 1.6 diesel Octavia estate is over 1800

Yes, Up GTI. It's a fantastic engine, but it does take some running in. Certainly in the GTI, it is characterful, sounds great, and wills to be revved. It's economical too.
Me too. Identical to yours, although red GTI badge998kg plus the 115hp 3cylinder engine is brilliant!
Admission: off to JBS for 140hp ECU remap in Feb

It's a decent little car for sure. I notice there's been some sort of update to the Polo already as MiL's has the Polo badge in the middle of the boot lid, I guess to bring in line with the new range/brand-wide look. She wanted a manual so the GTI was out of the question. She got a good deal on it and arrived a month earlier than expected, which was nice.Pros: Love the 3 Cyl 'beat', it's very, very quiet, great in town and not unheard to have late 40s/early 50s MPG on M'ways, even when I'm driving...

It won’t be. They are 1300-1400 kgMy current 1.6 diesel Octavia estate is over 1800
1150kg is shown as the kerb weight for the previous Octavia 1.0. (manual). DSG is 1172kg Pretty impressive for that size of car.
The current model Octavia 1.0 manual is a little bit heavier, shown at 1226kg.
But yeah. 1150kg kerb weight is impressive and with care, as shown, good mpg figures will be possible along with decent performance.
To compare with other VAG cars (using the most basic spec models i can find on AT) (115/110ps engine)
Up! GTI with same engine is 1070kg.
Golf S 1.0 is 1161kg (current model 1189kg)
Seat Arona, 1112kg
Seat Ateca, 1205kg
Skoda Kamiq 1158kg
Skoda Karoq 1265kg
I.....don't really know what i've proved / disproved there. Erm...thanks.
