Jetta/Vento - buying tips

Hi, I'm a bit of newbie when it comes to dubs so bare with me.
Originally after getting rid of my mini, I was wanting to get a mk2 golf gti but for onr reason and another have now settled on either a jetta or a vento. Is there anything i should be looking for when buying either of these ? I've contacted a bloke who has an 87 Jetta GTI 16V which i'm quite interested in. What should I look for with this ? If i was going for a vento it would probably just be a 1.6/1.8 as I can't afford to run a VR. Any help or pointers would be appriciated.

There is a good guide written on here somewhere- use the search function for it.
Jetta same mechancals as Mk2 Golf, just plus a boot, ussually worth less than Golf gtis, tho 16v Jetta are not v common so may be worth a tad less.
Ref Ventos a non VR or 16v one will be dog slow tho vs a 16v jetta, al have wallowamatic suspension as standard.
