Probs with me 8v GTI
Discussion
Have a couple of problems I would like to get sorted out...
My idle speed is sometimes around 1250rpm (too high) then for no reason it jumps to around 2000rpm... otherwise the car drives normally but its doing my head in.
The Haynes manual mentions an increased idle speed on cars with a/c (which mine doesn't have) could it have the wrong component fitted somewhere?
Also get a crunch on second gear when cold, or it could just be that i'm not paying attention in the morning? the gearstick is a little sloppy so i'm hoping its just the gear linkage, but any other thoughts?
Car is an '88 1.8 Gti as per my profile
Cheers

sounds like idle valve common problem, easy job to change.
try removing it and wd40 inside it.

Thanks mate, I will have a look in the morning and report back.
What would you reccommend in the way of modifications? I don't want it bling bling, I know how i'm going to have it, very retro on wide 14" max rims, so no styling comments or suggestions of massive kits etc.
It is being done on a budget, I haven't got a decent income anymore, for the time being anyway and I'm making the most of what I have.
I was thinking about some performance dampers, and maybe lowering by about 25mm. Also poly suspension bushes have been suggested.
I like the way the car drives... I just want it a bit, well, tighter! (don't we all?)

Engine code is PB, I think it has Digifant Fuel Injection.
According to Mr Haynes, I have an Idle speed stabilisation control valve- this is just along from the airflow meter... I think!
I hate Fuel Injection, give me a carb, at least I could understand them
Digifant 2. Have an eyeball around all the air/vac hoses looking for splits/disconnected hoses allowing air leaks.
Next have a look inside the throttle body inlet and ensure its cleaned free of carbon/gum buildup using a toothbrush and carb cleaner.
Check the throttle butterfly is correctly adjusted.
Clean out the idlse stabilisation valve with carb cleaner put it all back together.
HTH.

How easy is this to do? I have the spanner skills of a rock ape!
I would be able to do it if I had a decent diagram but the haynes manual doesn't say how to do this... in fact most things suggest going back to a vw dealer whats this mention of a bentley manual online? It's supposed to be better?
Cheers
Dave
The procedure is simple even for an "ape"..
My advice is to get the book youve mentioned, familiarise yourself with the layout, get some spanners and then leave it to someone else..
Only joking, its good for morale...
Deffo go get the book tho and have a good coupla hours studying the layout and various procedures.
If youre not happy about tackling it just take to someone you trust.
