Just done a return trip to the UK from my home in Hungary, used my 5 year old A6 2.5Tdi quattro tiptronic avant for the journey.

On the return did Calais to Budapest in just under 15 hours (1,600 km) on two tanks of fuel, averaging 37 mpg and over 60 mph including stops. When I got home I felt as if I had just set out, very impressive indeed. I was cruising at 90-100 mph most of the time, with occasional blasts to around 125 mph in Germany.

Not a bad little drive. Since I moved to the south of France I've had many a day dream about what car would be ideal for the trip. Changes weekly, at the moment I'm favouring big German saloons, of course, but a new 911 appeals too.

Indeed, next time will be in a Ferrari 348 (I hope ) I expect my time in the Audi will still stand as my best (too many petrol stops in the 348 )
