New to this site and have found it to be very informative.
Can I pick your brains re the the fitting of a towbar to my 2016 190bhp Tdi 4x4 L&K.
According to Skoda it is not possible fit a towbar to a 150 or 190bhp Tdi 4x4 without upgrading the cooling system. Am i missing something as this is not required on none 4x4's.
Thanks for any advise.

Blimey, never heard of this.

Googling 'skoda towbar cooling system upgrade' does indeed reveal some info - not sure what model of Skoda you are talking about though, is this a Superb?

Sounds like it would be cheaper to change the car!

How can a poster with 2040 posts and registered for 174 months be "new to this site?"

Please take this as a speculative thought...... I know nothing about Superbs.

However - when VW factory fit a towbar to a Mk 2 Touareg they also upgrade the radiator cooling fan to one with a higher wattage motor. If you ask them to retrofit a towbar they insist on doing the same making it an expensive process.

In reality the higher rated fan is only required if you intend to tow the full 3.5 tonnes up long steep inclines on very hot summer days. If you dig around in their internal info there's a document that states the original fan is just fine up to 2.something tonnes. Armed with that info I fitted a towbar to our Touareg myself and it's happily dragged around 2 tonnes of caravan for a few 1000 miles with no temperature issues at all.

If the reality is that situation with the Superb is the same (does the 4x4 give a greater towing weight than the same engine with FWD?), which it may not be, and you don't intend using it to drag it's max towing weight over the alps in 35 degree heat than I really wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the helpful reply.
The 4x4 is capable of towing more than the other cars with the same engine, so your comment makes sense. However I will not be towing to the maximum permitted.
So I will leave as is and keep a close eye on oil and water temperatures.
Thanks

Hi,

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering what the outcome was. I too have just purchased a 190hp superb 4x4 dsg and have since discovered the cooling upgrade requirement. Have you had and issues or has everything been ok?

Kind regards

Chris

Hi Chris
I fitted an after market detatchable tow bar with dedicated wiring kit. All works as it should as would a factory fit.
I tow a car transporter trailer at 1860 kg and have had no problems what so ever. Water temperature stays at 90°, the oil temperature rises to 110° on steep inclines the reduces back to maybe 92° but I do tend to push on setting the cruise control slightly higher than 60mph.

Thanks for the update, since I only plan to tow about 1600kg I'll stop worrying about it.
Cheers
