My oil level warning light keeps flashing when I turn the ignition key. It does not remain lit though once the engine has started. I have topped up the oil to the maximum mark, but still the light flashes. Has anyone come across this problem before and, if so, what was the cause and how did you rectify the problem. I don't want to put any more oil in the engine for fear of damaging the catalytic converter.

All advice gratefully received.

Don't put any more oil in!!!

So long as the oil is within the marks on the dipstick, (and the car is parked flat!), so long as the oil light goes off once the engine is going then there is no problem.

Bear in mind the light is not an oil level light, its an oil pressure light. Before the engine starts there will be no pressure (hence the light). Once the engine starts going and the oil pump starts up you get pressure, and it should turn off.

If the oil level is too low and the pump cannot draw enough in, the pressure drops and the light will come on.

Oh- and if the light didn't come on before you started the engine then you should be worried..

...could just be the sensor, or more seriously a duff pump/blockage/lack of oil..

Thanks for that info. I never thought about it being a pump issue. I shall definitely not be putting any more oil in. It is parked on a bit of a slope I never took that into account before. The light does not stay on once the engine is running, but it does come on when I turn the ignition on. I need to pop into my local garage next week, so I'll ask them to give it a quick once over.

I dont know Corrado's backwards, but if it the same dash as a Golf of same age, then the oil, alternator and water temp lights all flash when the ignition is on but the engine not started. It's nothing to worry about provided they all go out when the engine's running!

All the warning lights come on when you turn on the ignition initially in order to show that they work.

I can't recall whether the oil light flashes on mine, but the low coolant warning light certainly does.

So long as all warning lights extinguish shortly after the engine starts then you are fine.

Don't think you have any issues Em if light goes out when engine on, but flippin' corrado oil lights/buzzers grrr

Had an intermitent issue with my buzzer & light, came on itermitently when over 3k rpm, mate advised it was probabally just a dash board issue, but the engine had done over 100k so a new oil pump might be a good idea anyway i thought, so in it went along with new big end/main bearings while the sump was off.

1 day later buzzer again- grrrr, so new oil pressure switches, 2 days later buzzer again! grrr, so ended up just disabling the soddin' pressure switches & that did the job.
