I was wondering if anyone here is also a member of clubgti??

I am having real difficulty registering with the club and was wondering if anyone had a contact email for any of the moderators, as there is nothing listed under the help section.

Can anyone help??

Cheers
Ed.

I have now emailed them, and hopefully I will be able to post soon. (having trouble with my MFA, water Temp gauge and 3 ancillary gauges!)

In what car ?

Your profile says you have a Celica, but I'm guessing it's not that car as this is the VAG forum ?

Thats more like it !

Ok - fire away, whats the exact problems ?

(I've owned an 1600 ('82) GTi for 8 years & an 1800 ('83) GTi for 5 years, so like to think I know Mk1's fairly well.... )

Actually thinking about it, could well be the earth.... There is an earth wire (can't remember the colour, might be brown & blue) that attaches to the head (which is earth for water temp gauge & MFA) - I have to redo mine on a regular basis & normally end up earthing it to one of the rocker cover nuts !

Well, the MFA doesn't work at all (nothing on the screen, dont know if the switch works), nor do any of the clocks in the centre console (probably not connected as the console is loosely fitted anyway), or the water temp gauge in the dash binnacle.

Quite worrying. And it means I'm permanantly paranoid about it overheating, so I'm driving around with the heaters on (not nice in this weather)

I presume the fuel gauge is still working ok ? (just trying to rule things out)

Yep, fuel gauge, tacho and speedo work fine. As do the trip meter and odometer. But there is a little MPG gauge at the top of the binnacle that doesnt seem to move, and it has a green LED in it that doesn't ever light up.

Also forgot to mention the red LED on the water temp guage flashes for the first few minutes of a journey, and then stops flashing until the engine is next started again.

Any ideas??

Flashing light on water temp gauge is completely normal (should flash maybe 5 times after the ignition is turned on).

If the fuel gauge is working, this means your voltage stabilisation relay is working fine, so it rules that out.

The gauges down by the gear stick may well just not be wired in, so we'll not worry about them for now (can you check over the weekend ?)

MPG gauge is a pain in the a*se to get working, but the MFA shouldn't be too bad (famous last words !).

Follow the instructions on the below site to try & get the MFA back to life (might also be worth checking the earth wire I mentioned earlier before you do this - have a general look round the engine bay & see if there are any obvious loose wires) : www.realtimetv.co.uk/wheelerdealers/wheeler5.shtml

Welcome to the wonderful world of a 22year old hot hatch !

Right, well I have the MFA working again, but the outside temp reads -30 and the MPG is reading 8!!! Turns out it was a blown fuse, that didn't look blown. What is a good temp for the oil to be at??

Water temp gauge still doesn't work though, I have fitted a new sender unit, and refitted the connection, still no joy.

Also, the fan switch doesn't work, so I am going to get a new unit and do a complete coolant flush on Tuesday.

As if that wasn't enough, I have now found out that my reverse lights dont work, and my sidelights, dip and main beam are on the blink!! Alternating lamps for each operation??

The joys of owning a 22year old car??? Mild annoyance, but quite satisfying when they're sorted.

You can be expecting more posts from me!!!

Cheers,
Ed
