Hi
I've shortlisted the A4 to be our next car. Mostly town driving. ~7k miles in a year. Hope to keep the car for 5-6 years or depending on how it's doing at that point. So going for a petrol. Hoping to buy a 2017 or 2018 car with less than 20k miles on the clock.

Stuggling to choose between A4 1.4tfsi and 2.0tfsi. Is there a big real world fuel economy figures between these two?

Also manual vs automatic. What are your experiences. Is the Audi s-tronic system reliable?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Had a 2018 2.0 tfsi S-line for a year, done about 14000 miles. In that time I have averaged 42mpg according to the trip computer, 39mpg by calc. Daily 40mile commute is mixed A and B roads.
S- tronic box is fine so far, car has done 17200 miles. Only comment would be that it can seem a bit slow to engage when pulling out of junctions, but I think this is how they are.

Got a 1.4 in the family since new in 2016.

Urban use only, it does 36mpg. On the motorway at a super steady 75mph using cruise control and AC on eco, it’ll just touch 50mpg. 6 speed manual.

Both worked out on a calculated rather than the on board computer which tends to show an extra couple of MPG.

In the classified the 1.4 does seem to be usefully cheaper, secondhand. I don’t know if there’s a stigma against them.

My 2018 a4 avant 1.4 goes back next week. I can get high 50s to a max of 62mpg over my 40 mile motorway commute. Pretty gutless engine and needs to be rev’d high and hard to make any speed. But perfect on the motorway for a non exciting relaxing commute

However. I struggle to get mid 30s when I’m driving around town. They all appear to come with stop start which helps a little bit but if you do 7k around towns and short trips I suspect mid 30s

The b9 a4 is available with a ridiculous amount of options so be sure to take your time picking one!

Have no experience of the other set ups but I’ve been quite impressed by my other half’s A4 Avant which was relatively cheap second hand last year and has the 1.4 tfsi and is manual. The engine feels surprisingly adequate and torquey and the gear change is smooth.
I suppose you just need to get a few test drives in to make up your mind.

There were a load of cheap lease deals on them.

I have had a 190 tfsi for under a week. The trip back from Somerset to Yorkshire, with a LOT of stop start traffic on th M42 , saw 50 mpg on the computer, pretty unbelievable to me. A more local trip yesterday, around ten mile round trip, saw around 35mpg, still pretty good in my opinion. I seriously considered the 1.4 engine, it has excellent feedback, but Audi have discontinued it, which may adversely affect its desirability
