Hi there I'm sometimes getting black smoke from exhaust whilst hard acceleration, engine starts and runs fine, what are the possible causes?

You own a euro 4 (pre DPF) Diesel

Honestly, some smoke, even quite a lot, especially on the first hard acceleration at higher rpm for a while, is completely normal for these engines.

Diesels with a DPF should not smoke,

Has it been remapped? Black smoke out of the back of a diesel usually a fuelling “issue”

Completely normal for your age of car as it is pre-DPF

If it's a lot of black smoke (and subject to whether it has/should have a DPF) then it may mean your injectors need removing and ultrasonically cleaning. Leaky/poor spray pattern from diesel injectors can cause damage to the engine if it's dumping loads of fuel into the engine when it shouldn't.

Will be on a sticker on engine, probably on a sticker under boot carpet and on log book. What engine is it? 2.0 TDI 140? 170?

for example the Audi A3 - BMN 170 will have DPF, BMM im not sure if they did, BKD 140 shouldnt have a DPF just a cat.
