I had suspected for some time the all wheel drive system on my Tiguan was not performing correctly , the car did not “feel “ right ,and once or twice when the road was slippery the front wheel would appear to loose grip, especially when towing caravan ,and the TC light would flash, but nothing else would happen .
The problem finally full came to light when I was parking on a slight grass slope , one of the front wheels lost traction and just spun without the TC kicking in and transferring drive to rear wheels .
Out with son’s Vag-com diagnostic software , and “all wheel drive , mechanical failure “ was reported ,first thought ,thank heavens for extended warrantee, but off to dealer
At the VW dealer their diagnostic showed a similar report , but also had a series of steps to pin down the actual problem .So I left the car with them for the day
Later they call me to report a software upgrade was required , but it’s a mechanical problem ? , yes but the upgrade will sort it , routine recall upgrade ? no , it will cost £90 , but we will not charge the £80 diagnostic charge .cheers !
Upgrade done , back to same slippery slope , and 4WD working correctly .
Do I understand ? nope , am I happy the all wheel drive is now working with winter’s worst still to come , Yep !

Firstly download torque pro or Carly to your phone for dealer level diagnostics through your smartphone so you know what is going on and why.

There is a fuse in your fuse box that is responsible for powering the rear duff and the systems that control it.
Check your Haldex fuse before anything else, and in the future remember to buy cars
With mechanical systems instead of electro-mechanical.

Pulling a lever for low-range or to lock a diff was never hampered by a fuse or software, you just pull the lever.

Maybe you should trade in against a defender? Much simpler to diagnose and fix

I dont think you could have read the whole post .We have VAG diagnostic installed on a laptop so were able to diagnose that there was a problem before going to the dealer , it also showed a minor problem with the Climatronic
The problem was cured , with a software upgrade , nothing else .
Get RR , err dont think so . My brother has a RR Sport , and It had to spend a whole day in dock for a FULL softwear re- instal to cure quite a few problems , including the retractable steps deploying whilst he was driving along

Ross Tech is good - kudos for using it. Do you always keep the laptop in the car? Do you always keep your phone in your pocket?

Maybe you need to re-read my comment and point out where I mention RR. As a lifelong hater of all things RR I am mildly upset that You should accuse me of making such a suggestion!
LR is not RR and defenders don’t have software so please don’t try to put words in my mouth, especially not inaccurate ones!

Sorry, didn’t mean to upset you , just see RR and Defender as being from same stable ,hence the link
I don’t want to go into a discussion of what car I “should “ have bought .I have a Tiguan , am happy with it , the purpose for my post was to highlight the bizarre nature of the fault , diagnosis and cure , nothing else .
I would have thought what ever type of diagnostic you have in your pocket, all you will get is a sooner diagnosis of what is wrong .If the problem stops the car dead , then Britannia rescue is the answer in the first instance , worry about the problem later .otherwise wait till I get home . But please don’t take this as a complete dismissal of your suggestion though .

Torque Pro and Carly are not "dealer level diagnostics". VAGCOM is close (ish) which is what the OP is already used.

Probably an improper diagnostic in the system registering a non-existent fault and disabling the system.

Still under warranty? There shouldn't be a charge for software updates, especially as the SW was faulty.

Be glad it was just a SW fix.
