My dad went to this auction yesterday & watched an Audi fetch £43525 (including buyers premium)

Now there's Quatros in the autotrader starting from a grand, what was special about this one ?

Because it's not just a Quattro - it's a super-rare short-wheelbase Sport Quattro.

Thanks Andrew, did a search on SWB & found this www.quat.com/sqhome.html that explains it, bit like the Metro 6r4 etc

Lot 78 is the real bargain there.

£43K!!!!
OMG.
A friend of mine is contemplating building a SWB Quattro out of a knackered old UR Turbo (or even just a 4WD GT Coupe) and has figured out its gonna cost around £7-£10k (depending on wheel & tyre combo, paint, seats/dash etc) and at least he would be able to trash it without feeling guilty. And it'll be RHD.

Obviously, if £$£$ were no object, I'd have a SportQuattro in a heartbeat

Is he some sort of psychopath? Forget the cut and shut business. All he'll end up with is a worthless, twitchy handling, hot-rod.

Why not just take the ur-q, restore it and tune up the engine? Or rather replace the engine with a 20 valve unit and tune that up, since spares for the old WR engine are getting somewhat hard to find.

He already has a UR Turbo on its way to becoming a restored classic (sourcing front seats and some talking digi dash wiring to go)

I personally think its a bit of a bad idea, and if it was as easy as he seems to think, then why isn't everyone doing it?? But if it does work, what a result!! A SWB Quattro for less than a quarter of the cost!!

Anyway, he has had (and still is in) discussions with Dialynx (used to make SWB Quattros years ago, have a monsterous grey Sport Quattro) and some company who build Paris Dakar Land Rovers about cutting and shuting. He'll probably end up using a GT Coupe (cost more than anything).

To each his own I suppose.

Obviously if it does work, I'll be copying him immediatly, but I'll let him test the water first, cos I'm a good mate like that

I seem to remember there was once a company that made short quattros from normal quattros.

Not anymore they dont!

They are more than willing to talk you through the nessacery modifications, but dont actually undertake the work themselves anymore.

As I mentioned previously, my friend has been looking into it.

What Dialynx are doing at the moment are 650BHP RS6 estates capable of 204mph @ 4500rpm!!!

I think the reason they gave my mate is something to do with not being able to warranty the work

Thats how I read it anyway.

And if money were no object, it'd have to be a SWB.

Yes thats correct. The original short sport had the fron end from the Audi 80 grafted onto the shortened rear end of the UR Quattro.
The Audi 80 has the more upright angled screen than the Quattro and its coupe variants.
